This is a visual.

Rob Lucci

Silly Dr. Gero, everybody knows where your lab is!

Tesla Coil

Another slow episode. “We need to get going right now!” “Okay. But first, let’s talk about things.” “Okay, but we need to get going now because we’ve spent too much time talking.” “Okay, but let’s divide up the Senzu beans. Allow me to talk about what six divided by three is.”

This episode could have been one scene in which Trunks and Vegeta argue and fly off, and then Piccolo tells Gohan to take Bulma and Yajirobe home while he, Krillin and Tien fly off. Five minutes tops.

Terrorking

I rather enjoyed Trunks meeting his father that he idolized, only to realize that man is Vegeta. This is also the beginning of Trunks’ suedom being destroyed.

Carly Nagisa

So all of this arc’s problems could have been solved immediately if Bulma just stayed away from the battlefield. Yet when its time to justify her place or fix her mistake, she still ends up eating potential time to beat Dr. Gero before he makes it to his lab with hilarity. Never change Bulma..never change.

CG glob water men.

Rob Lucci

Can animators stop using conspicuous CG? It’s terrible, man! Just animate really well!

Tesla Coil

“Okay guys. We’ve spent three episodes building up an incredible amount of exposition about this sci-fi setting. There’s a lot of detail, but the viewers definitely understand this world’s future. What are we gonna do for the next arc?”

“Ghosts. Water Ghosts.

Carly Nagisa

Are we sure that we got the right genre for this show?

Every cameraman villain is a secret rapist.

Rob Lucci

The best idea is to record yourself creating a snuff film. There’s no way this can backfire!

Terrorking

“FUCK THESE COILS! IMMA RAPE YOU!”

Tesla Coil

God, this backstory. So Girlface here is getting raped by a dude with a camera, right? The guy is filming the rape he’s in the middle of performing. Girlface grabs an axe, and kills her rapist. Hurray!

Now her boyfriend or brother or whatever wants to help her. What does he do? He hides the body. He hides the video tape proving that she acted in self-defence. Then he murders a guy in charge of the dam so he can flood the entire area. All of this to remove the evidence that, I repeat, proves the woman acted in self-defence.

Carly Nagisa

If its not seeing Mira be put into bondage fanservice for half of the episode, its transitioning into a potential rape scene. Tesla basically said everything that I wanted to address on that scene so I’ll go back to the Mira in chains one. If she finally realized how this world’s rules work….WHY IN THE WORLD ISN’T SHE ABUSING THEM?!?! Seriously if I broke the code and could change reality how I want it, I’d sure as hell would use it to complete my objective and STOP the bad guy. Not wake up to someone touching my chest and act all typical anime girl-ish. Sigh.

ILLEGAL COILS AAAGGHHH

Rob Lucci

Overall, I dunno what’s happening. Coils & Shit. This show is exposition heavy and hasn’t left an impression because neither Kyouma nor Mira are particularly interesting. The best thing I can say is that the dynamic between the two works pretty well.

Tesla Coil

The biggest flaw of the episode for me is how disconnected the flashbacks seemed from Kyoma. When this scene started, it was just the water-blood-blade man talking to himself. I figured it was part of the flashback. Then Kyoma appears from nowhere (without any explanation of why he thought he needed to go here, or even where “here” was) and beats the crap out of the guy.

We got a real explanation of Coils and what Dimension W is, and it was presented in a way that made it easier to take in than all the other exposition. So that’s a plus. But the narrative of this arc was just bizarre.

Terrorking

While I could not be pulled into the episode, I admire the sheer determination of the show to not just say “They’re ghosts.” I’m sure the explanation they gave makes perfect sense with the other 4 episodes of explanations they’ve given though.

Carly Nagisa

I just don’t care anymore…

Migi’s sacrifice

Rob Lucci

We finally see the fruits of Migi’s development, and Shinichi kind of come back to being more “normal”. Instead of focusing on the villain who we know is mostly just generic badman, they use him as a tool to continue Shinichi and Migi’s development. I like it.

Terrorking

You wanna see a bad example of a force of evil suddenly turning good? See Naruto and his tailed beast. Want to see a good example of a force of evil turning good? See this episode. Actually, that would seem bad too. You have to watch the entire show. That’s what makes Migi’s sacrifice work. He’s been slowly, throughout the show’s run, becoming more and more selfless. It wasn’t a sudden revelation or heartfelt plea that turned Migi from being all about self-preservation into sacrificing himself for somebody; it was 23 episodes of character development.

Carly Nagisa

This scene is really touching in itself but you really have to watch the show to really get the true impact that its trying to tell. For the longest time we seen Shinichi slowly becoming less human while Migi was developing more emotions and compassion. Here is where it all comes full circle for the both of them in a well devised way. I don’t mind what they did with Gotou here because he isn’t the main focus or someone you should battle in a symbolic/intellectual manner. That was Ryoko’s job and it was already settled. Beside, its not like the actual battle between Shinichi and Gotou is over yet.

Armless Shinichi.

Rob Lucci

Here we see Shinichi become more normal again. I like the change in hairstyle – it makes him look like he is at the start of the show before becoming a deconstructed shonen protagonist. Aunt lady is cool too, but the VAs were trying too hard to sound like hicks.

Terrorking

This old lady. Who knew Japan had rednecks? Maybe we’re not so different after all.

Carly Nagisa

I really like the argument and setting that the Old woman gives to Shinichi. If this was an actual Shonen manga then its clear that Shinichi would win the argument and make the old woman be impressed with his selfless and self-centered garbage. Just in time for him to learn a new super special awesome power from Migi/his ancestors and fight Gotou again. It doesn’t fall under tradition Seinen either so it really stood out for me.

afmhf0g

He waits.

Rob Lucci

Gotou is a scary generic badman.

Terrorking

As if Gotou could possibly be more intimidating. Let’s see what he looks like when not blacked out.

 Carly Nagisa

Eldritch abomination time next episode? Oh boy!

Champloo

The thirst is real, but Mugen clearly gives no fucks.

Rob Lucci

This is very Cowboy Bebop and I love it. Developing Mugen and having him get outwitted when he seems a bit vulnerable.

Terrorking

Who knew Japan had Injuns. Maybe we’re not so different after all.

Ep was about Mugen’s past. I can’t say he received much character development since he’s the same Mugen as ever, but he did receive some character depth from us learning about his backstory.

Carly Nagisa

Meanwhile Jin continues to be best boy by supporting Mugen the only way he knows how. By giving absolutely zero fucks and letting him solve his own problems.

Shippuden

Even the Eldritch Abominations are boring.

Rob Lucci

I don’t even know how many weeks are left. This is repetitive bullshit!

Terrorking

Repetition, the arc. All of this is pointless. This is the worst kind of filler, which doesn’t seek to expand on something the canon glossed over, but instead is just there to be pointless, irrelevant, time-wasting bullshit.

I could say that same thing every week while this arc is going on. In fact, I will. Because repetitiveness.

Carly Nagisa

Fuck this arc and everything it stands for.

A CERBERUS

Rob Lucci

If I give this arc anything, it’s certainly inventive and creative.

Terrorking

For two weeks I mildly enjoyed One Piece. Ian Sinclair as Brook was really good. The minute he left we returned to typical One Piece doldrums.
