Chillin’ Krillin.

Rob Lucci

It’s a terrible meme, but Yamcha got cucked. There’s no other way to put it. He’s so excited to settle down with Bulma, and then Bulma puts all of her attention on caring for an injured Vegeta. Rip Yamcha.

Tesla Coil

Krillin trains by shooting kamehamehas at the ocean. Tien and Chiaotzu train by having Tien shoot ki blasts at Chiaotzu. Gohan, Goku and Piccolo train by having Goku and Piccolo beat the crap out of Gohan. And Yamcha trains by watching Vegeta through a window. …And then somehow three years had passed.

DJ JayRap

And then on this day, Yamcha got NTR’d by Vegeta. Not much else to really have to say here, three years just passed by all in a flash.

Vaioumon

Man, this episode psyches you out by having the narrator only 10 minutes in, making you go “Oh shit, is it over already?!” Then the show continues to show sorta training and Yamcha’s heart being shattered and then it’s really over.

Terrorking

This episode does a good job of showing the deep psychological issues (most notably an inferiority complex) that plagues Vegeta. The man was killing himself to get stronger, subjecting his body to far more punishment than Goku had to endure, all because he is the prince and has to be the strongest. I loved it.

Also, Yamcha got cuckolded. Not that he didn’t deserve it.

Carly Nagisa

So Trunks asks Goku not to tell either of his parents about his birth. What does Goku do in a few scenes later? He wishes Bulma good luck with the baby. I swear you’re lucky that everyone thinks you’re dumb. Also RIP Yamcha, you will never score.

Akame ga Kill (Finale Edition)

The final arena.

Rob Lucci

Gentlemen, it’s been an honor.

The terrible ice CG is worth noting.

Tesla Coil

I may be wrong, but I never got the impression that the ice was CGI. It just looked like a background cel – it didn’t move enough for me to think it’s CGI.

DJ JayRap

Frozen battle arena. I could swear this was in some other show.

Terrorking

Here’s what I got from that moment in the screenshot. Esdeath casually did more damage to the empire than the supposedly “strongest imperial arms” could after multiple shots. She just touches the ground and all that happened. This series has no consistency when it comes to the strength of characters, and that only serves to ruin tension.

Carly Nagisa

Can someone tell me the exact point of this scene was? Akame wasn’t gonna run away and Esdeath didn’t need to even kill those pointless rebel scum. I swear to whatever god Akame ga Kill worship that this show likes to be obnoxiously flashy at every chance it gets.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.34.53

Esdeath vs. Akame

Rob Lucci

For once, the show has really good animation and a well-paced fight with good transitions and shots. Sadly, this is wasted because these characters suck.

Tesla Coil

I guess the fighting animation was all right, but the choreography was stupid. Akame’s a close-range sword fighter, and Esdeath is also mostly fighting at close range. Why do they both bother jumping 100 feet in the air every two shots? Which raises another question of why Esdeath is only using her ice powers to create swords.

DJ JayRap

Esdeath has ridiculous ice powers, with almost no explanation as to what she could possibly do. She could use them for long-range, but chooses to melee spam. Against an opponent who probably can’t handle too many long-ranged attacks. I felt like there was zero tactics involved in all of this.

Terrorking

Why doesn’t she freeze time. Not even a question.

Carly Nagisa

So Esdeath has complete mastery of ice and we have seen in countless works of fiction that ice can be versatile and immensely powerful within the right person. So, why the hell is Esdeath not scrapping the surface with her broken power? For someone who is said to be a master tactician and probably a war goddess, I feel like Esdeath is holding the idiot ball here.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.36.52.png

Akame activates her TRUMP card.

Rob Lucci

Her Trump Card makes her title drop. More importantly, she says “Nobody deserves to die!”, and Esdeath points out the hypocrisy… but that exchange just sorta ends. Were the writers trying to be deep? Because Esdeath’s totally right. It’d be like Jeffrey Dahmer saying it’s wrong to eat people!

Tesla Coil

“People don’t deserve to die because people want to live” is normally a moral that viewers can all agree with. But consider this: Akame’s trump card is the ability to power herself up with all the souls of people she’s killed. That’s right – Akame was only able to beat Esdeath because she killed a lot of people in the past. You can’t have a character preach about how horrible killing is while the plot rewards her for killing a lot of people.

DJ JayRap

KILLING PEOPLE IS WRONG!

“lol okay”

PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE

“Yeah okay.”

But really, her entire job description is being an assassin. Know what assassins do? Kill people. What has she done this entire time? Killed people, or accidentally’d into it. Her friends all died too, I guess, so that’s what made this skewed view remotely plausible. I didn’t know what this trump card did beyond power-ups, so Tesla Coil mentioning it made my jaw drop.

Terrorking

To reiterate what was said, the lesson here is paradoxical when you take the whole series (or even just the end of the episode) into consideration. Tatsumi’s whole character development in Episode 1 and 2 was “You gotta kill, bro. Don’t be a pussy.” Everyone killshamed him because he was unable to be a coldhearted killer. So yeah, this message from Akame came out of nowhere.

Carly Nagisa

There is some truth to this lesson, and if Akame ga Kill was a good show then they could get their point across without being idiotic hypocrites. It only hurts the message further when you realize that Akame is being fueled by the people she killed. Maybe if this trump card came at the cost of Akame sacrificing her lifeforce or someone she cares for, then maybe it would be better. What am I saying? This trump card is stupid no matter how you slice it.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.38.37

fuck this arm

Rob Lucci

So, every person Akame cuts dies near-instantly, except Esdeath, who has the time to cut off her own arm off before the curse spreads. Maybe I’ll take back a little bit about this being a well-planned fight.

Tesla Coil

I don’t mind that Esdeath had time to cut off her arm. I feel like the curse has been animated slowly enough for that to be reasonable. What bothers me is that there’s no repercussion to this. We never saw Esdeath freeze her wound shut or anything, yet the only time she bleeds even a little is when she throws blood in Akame’s eyes.

DJ JayRap

I feel like nobody bothered to figure out this tactic when they got cut in places that weren’t the torso or throat.

Terrorking

It always amuses me when anime characters get dismembered and don’t even bat an eye. It also amuses me that bleeding out is just not a reality there worth considering.

Carly Nagisa

Esdeath had so many chances to avoid getting a direct cut, and even if she lost her arm she could have easily made an ice arm for a replacement. This goes back to my rant about Esdeath’s powers. She has so many tricks but is purposely being nerfed just so Akame can win her fight with her OHKO sword.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.40.27.png

Literally freezing time

Rob Lucci

Why didn’t she use this power at the start? Also, this power continues to make no sense.

Tesla Coil

You cannot. Freeze. An afterimage. Any explanation would have to involve Esdeath’s power freezing the light reflecting off the afterimage, but if her power freezes light too, she wouldn’t be able to see anything!

DJ JayRap

Freezing time. Freezing. Get it? hahahaha ice powers can freeze time.

Terrorking

When this happened I thought “Finally, she remembers she can freeze time.” I didn’t care though because she could’ve done it at literally any point in the fight.

Carly Nagisa

This is bullshit of the highest degree. I have to agree with Tesla on the fact that you can’t freeze an afterimage or “the killer presence of someone”. This whole battle reeks of garbage cause Esdeath is canonically so powerful that they have to keep making up excuses that make no sense in order for Akame to win. This is the final fight in the anime series and this is how it plays? Christ, I need a drink.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.40.32

They sure do have long hair.

Rob Lucci

How do you have an afterimage when time is frozen?! What the fuck am I watching?!

Tesla Coil

And Esdeath realized she’d frozen an afterimage before she unfroze time! Considering we were never shown any limit to Esdeath’s time-freezing power, it doesn’t look like anything was stopping her from, I don’t know, looking for the real Akame while time was frozen.

DJ JayRap

I remember when freezing time had its limits in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. This show failed at learning to at least say “10 seconds” or something.

Terrorking

This makes no sense. At least, when it comes to what we’ve been shown, and goes back to what I said earlier about this whole affair being devoid of tension. Her powers are never truly explained, we don’t know the limits of her strength, nor do we know if using her powers even fatigues her. The show was more than content to devote time to her sadism and her tits rather than answer basic questions.

Now on to what happened. She turned off her time freeze. Why? Is it draining her? We simply don’t know. She just decides to do it. The show wasn’t going for a “she really wanted to die” thing either, since nobody remarks that “She could’ve kept up the time freeze indefinitely” and she even laments the fact that she lost. It’s no secret that I hate Naruto, but got back to the Sasori vs Chiyo and Sakura fight to see a villain that chooses to die done well. He could’ve evaded, but chose not to, and characters remarked that’s what happened.

Carly Nagisa

Any one with an actual brain would be able to abuse Esdeath’s powers far better than what BONES thought they should do with Esdeath in the anime. I won’t go into deep details since my colleagues have already did, but let’s look at this scenario. Esdeath doesn’t have any limits and the writers don’t go into detail about how her imperial arms work aside from it being able to make ice from nothing. So she literally could have made millions of different scenarios to counteract Akame.

More importantly, she could have even pretend to fall for Akame’s trick only to stop time again right before Akame got the chance to slash her. Even if she didn’t do that, what’s to stop her from summoning ice from nothing to skewer Akame like a dart board? This fight is so disappointing that the only way it could be more distasteful if Esdeath lost her clothing or tried to do one last pointless fanservice shot.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.42.20

Tatsumi with the Esdeath end.

Rob Lucci

And after all of that, Esdeath’s final moments were literally exploding into ice with her one true love. Esdeath was evil, except for her pure and innocent dicklust for our Jesus protagonist.

Tesla Coil

This part was hilarious. You’d expect Esdeath shattering herself and Tatsumi’s body to have a dramatic moment where the shards linger in the air. Maybe something like Akame holding out her hand as the flakes pass through her fingers. But nope, the entire sequence of Esdeath walking over, grabbing Tatsumi and exploding into sparkles happened in seconds. Hilarious.

It almost makes you forget that Esdeath has been indoctrinated all her life that those who die are weak, and that being weak is unforgivable, so there’s no way in hell that she’d be at ease with her own death.

DJ JayRap

This… made me queasy. Purely because this was so firetrucking awful. All that horrible stuff she’s done all throughout, they expect me to feel anything when she dies by exploding with Jimmy? And then the show has the audacity to try harder by having Akame say “You really did love him. And you couldn’t understand it.”

Boy am I glad this is done.

Terrorking

Oh Esdeath, you were too pure for this world! Go be with Jimmy in the afterlife!!!!!!

Garbage.

Carly Nagisa

This show fucking sucks, I’m not gonna count how many times I said this since episode 1, but know that the exact number is probably bigger than Esdeath’s boobs.

f7dbsz7

Intermission.

Rob Lucci

Thank Terror.

Tesla Coil

I don’t remember this part, but it looks like the kind of thing that would be here.

DJ JayRap

I remember this happening 4 episodes ago.

Terrorking

This is better than all of Akame ga Kill.

Carly Nagisa

Why didn’t these two fight to the death instead?

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.43.58

AND THEN I PULL OUT MAH GUN

Rob Lucci

The show decides that Minister Honest has an imperial arms that breaks other imperial arms. Then he pulls out his gun and pops a cap in her ass before getting utterly destroyed. So, why… why is he the least compelling villain I think I’ve seen in years?

Tesla Coil

“Well,” said the writers. “We finished resolving the plot last episode and there’s still 15 minutes left of this one. What should we do now?” Obviously, kill Leone in one of the most unnecessary deaths in a series full of unnecessary deaths.

DJ JayRap

Oh, this guy again. Oops Leone died.

Much wow.

Terrorking

Oh wow. This. Wow.

Where do I even start? Perhaps with the fact that Honest was the very definition of loose end that nobody cared about? Maybe the fact that Leone’s death here is incredibly contrived and forced? Mayhaps that this death is entirely pointless?

I’ll just go through all of them. Honest here is incidental. You could’ve easily had him die by getting crushed by the giant mech that fell into the city. You could’ve had him get what the 10 year old got. There were any number of ways to wrap up his character since he’s just a generic evil politician with no connection whatsoever to any of the main cast.

Leone’s death is contrived because there had to be a perfect storm of stupid for it to happen. She confronted him alone. She stood there to get riddled with bullets when before she was super fast. Honest just so happened to have an Imperial Arms that shut down other Imperial Arms. Do you see how hackneyed this all is?

Her death is pointless because the plot was over. She could’ve stepped on a banana peel, slip and break her neck and it would’ve been just as poignant as her death here.

Carly Nagisa

You know if you have an imperial arm that can cancel all others…why in the world would you not mass produce it and give it to your strongest fighters? You can’t even argue if such a thing couldn’t be done since we know absolutely nothing with imperial arms. And with how many plot points this show has, you have a rainbow to choose for a backstory. I know this is anime only but with how close the manga is copying it, it might as well be canon.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.51.09

Leone dies in an alley for no reason.

Rob Lucci

Seriously! The Minister shoots her like eight times, but she lives for several hours and ends up walking several miles all over a debris-filled ruined city! The citizens have enough time to set up a celebration and everything and she’s still alive! How did she not receive medical attention!? We know from Dr. Stylish that there are expert surgeons, so… what the hell? Is this supposed to be deep!?

Tesla Coil

She even had bandages over her bullet wounds, implying that she’d had some treatment. What actually killed her here?

DJ JayRap

She passed out in an alleyway. I’m sure many men had their ways before they finally shipped her off to the morgue.

Terrorking

Deaths in this show stopped affecting me a long time ago. This death didn’t make me mad, it didn’t make me laugh. It made me roll my eyes. It was so utterly pointless and disrespectful to a main character. Dead in an alleyway after the plot ended. Okay, sure. At least she didn’t get raped or dismembered after she died.

Carly Nagisa

Jim and Tim must be having a field day with their dinner for tonight.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.52.24

The last of the Yaegers.

Rob Lucci

Who names their kid Run.

Tesla Coil

I am shocked, and a little disappointed, that Wave didn’t trip over Run, accidentally jam a knife into Najenda’s chest, and then kill himself and Run in grief.

DJ JayRap

THEY’RE STILL ALIVE?!

Terrorking

That Run guy. He sure was a guy. I learned a lot about his character over the course of this show. Boy, I tell you, he’s deep.

Carly Nagisa

So why did these two out of everyone else survive?

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.51.28

“Nobody deserves to die!” – “Let’s behead this kid first though!”

Rob Lucci

I can see why the public might want him dead but there’s no examination of this or anything, it’s just “you lost so go lose your head bitch”. Also how did he survive the exploding mech in the first place?!

Tesla Coil

Are you friggin’ serious? A kid who can’t be older than 12, who’s been manipulated into doing horrible things his whole life, who has come to terms with the fact that what he did was wrong and that life is sacred or some BS, wants to die for his crimes, and what does Night Raid do? What does the group of people who think life is sacred do? They pull the guillotine lever for him. Not one of them mentions the possibility of having the kid use the rest of his life and his royal influence to help people?

DJ JayRap

… yeah okay, let’s just kill an Emperor who didn’t even know what the butts he was doing. He was manipulated. By Honest. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to behead Honest? Wait that’s right, Leone bashed his face in. Guess we needed to kill the emperor after all.

Terrorking

Sure, execute the kid emperor after you realize he’d just been a puppet to the older politician. Sure, that makes sense. Sure, kill him and end the royal bloodline (which is the only one that can use the giant mecha imperial arms, btw) after he repented and realized that what he was doing was wrong instead of having him actually fix his empire. No, murdering the head of state who was a kid sure won’t cause civil war to the soldiers that are still loyal to him (RE: Esdeath’s division of the army that wasn’t in the capital when all this happened).

Carly Nagisa

There’s nothing that I could say that wasn’t beaten to death by my colleagues about how utterly stupid the message of this scene gives. So I will keep this brief. This is like one of the few times where showing mercy and letting the Empire work with his people to fix the empire would be good. Oh silly me, this is Akame ga Kill and we can’t let anything of good story writing exist here.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.53.13

Tatsumi’s village wondering when he’ll return.

Rob Lucci

I don’t have any words for this, I just can’t

Tesla Coil

Ahaha. They expected us to remember the names of Tatsumi’s two friends

DJ JayRap

Ha. Ha. They expected us to feel something for the name drops.

Terrorking

Oh hey, it’s this subplot. Neat, I guess?

Calry Nagisa

I hope these guys get murdered in the manga.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.54.00

Najenda and Akame part ways.

Rob Lucci

What’s Akame’s character? Why is she going into exile? Is her life empty without Tatsumi? On the bright side, Najenda does have Lubbock’s goggles, meaning she did specifically remember him. Too bad it took her like five episodes to do that.

Tesla Coil

I have an idea. Instead of all of this padding, why not extend the fight between Akame and Esdeath? It took something like 10 minutes for a character who wasn’t even the main or strongest character to beat the main villain.

DJ JayRap

AKAME IS STILL ALIVE?! I thought she was dead by now.

Terrorking

And because this show is built on pointless death, it felt the need to remind us that Najenda’s gonna die soon because of all the Susanoo’ing she did before. In the end, the only main character that’ll make it out of this is Akame. Why? Who the fuck knows.

Carly Nagisa

Najenda’s implied death is meaningless since she can die at any point and we won’t ever see it. So why bring up that plot-point at all? Also, why exactly does Akame need to be the Itachi of Night Raid and be the one to take all of their sins? This is so unbelievably stupid.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.56.43

Akame in a post-cre-THIS HAS A POST-CREDITS?!

Rob Lucci

What if these random bad guys turned out to be Night Raid or something.

Tesla Coil

How are the writers so out of touch with their own creation?! They say “killing is wrong”, but the final shot of the show is Akame Ga Killing random people purely because their target audience thinks blood is cool. In what other work of fiction have you seen a post-credits scene that completely invalidates the shit they were trying to present as a moral?!

DJ JayRap

O-ow. Ow. Ow. I got a stroke. OW.

Terrorking

Hey look, it’s the ending that completely invalidates the message during the Akame-Esdeath fight. She’s gonna ga kill the shit out of those guys.

Carly Nagisa

..Still better than Tenchi Muyo GXP.

Screenshot 2016-02-20 23.55.53

The End.

Rob Lucci

After months of discussing this, I can only say that this series makes me want to pass in my sleep. It’s solid proof that your 13-year-old self’s edgy story can get published and turned into an overseas hit. Ladies and gentlemen, this was Akame Ga Kill, and I’ll leave this show with the same note I had at the start of this journey.

fuck this show

Tesla Coil

I truly, honestly enjoyed this experience. This is a show that, in 24 episodes, did nothing right – except Bohls’ death. It’s like a guideline on how not to write stories, done by a person who actually thought he was writing something meaningful and poignant.

I sort of want to see if there’s anything worse than Akame ga Kill out there. It has to be possible – Akame ga Kill had one legitimately good scene involving one legitimately all right character. Could there be a published work of fiction where there are actually zero good scenes and no even remotely likable characters? Food for thought.

DJ JayRap

I usually write a jillion words unnecessarily, but this time, I’ll write just 3 words. Just 3 words to summarize this whole experience.

Fuck. This. Show.

Terrorking

First, the image. Of the 10 dead main characters in that image, only one death among them was poignant. Susanoo’s. 1/10 ain’t that bad, right? RIGHT?!

As for the show itself, Akame ga Kill was an experience. I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed it in a so bad it’s good way, because I didn’t. I hated this show and only found joy in talking about how much I hate it. Everything a competent writer would do, this show does the opposite. I dare say this is the worst show to have ever been on Toonami (even Wulin Warriors is better). Attack on Titan is garbage, but it at least has a consistent theme. SAO is trash, but again, it is consistent. This feels like it was written by a schizophrenic 12 year old.

Trash and I do not recommend. Want to watch so bad it’s good? Watch The Room.

Carly Nagisa

The show had a ton of potential and like most recent animes especially light novel based ones, it tried to be too complex and appeal to all the lowest common denominators in hoping to appeal to their fanbase. Because of this, the entire show didn’t know what it wanted to be and came out as one giant incoherent mess.  The only good thing it has is how talking about how bad this show is or using as a guide on what NOT to do for your own fiction story. I really hope that Toonami fans learn from this and decide to actually pick GOOD stuff to suggest for the Toonami staff to pick. Ah who am I kidding…call me when Toonami ends up picking another bad show because of popularity.

PS: You guys cannot convenience me that Tenchi Muyo GXP is better than Akame ga Kill.

Parasyte

uo1pjjr

Killsave.

Rob Lucci

Reiko’s increased humanity has given her a weakness, making her a pretty unique example of a villain who’s weaknesses develop as the series goes along – and not a disease, mind you, something that makes her more human. I think that makes her motivations more interesting.

DJ JayRap

I honestly love the dichotomy between Shinichi and Reiko. He’s becoming less and less human while struggling to maintain composure– alongside his own humanity–, while Reiko is becoming more human– while being curiously accepting of this as an ‘evolution’ for Parasytes. And it’s not thrown in our faces out of nowhere, it’s been developed as the show progressed. This is how good writing works!

Vaioumon

This episode doesn’t focus on Shinichi, and that’s okay since Shinichi’s just really been thrown into situations without he himself going anywhere for a while. Instead, we have Reiko, who’s a parasyte that’s slowly becoming more human. It’s fun because of all the little ways that she’s just a flipped Shinichi, and it makes me very interested to see where she goes from here.

Also Murano might be getting the axe maybe.

Terrorking

More development for Reiko, continuing from last week’s. She’s not trusted by her kind because she’s behaving more like a human than a Parasite, and she’s not trusted by humans because “she’s just a monster”. This is a great contrast for Shinichi, whereas instead of a human becoming more like a parasite, it’s the opposite.

Also, I found it really cool that Senor Detective kept saying “I would never hurt a child” as he died. Reiko, if she was thinking as logically as Parasites are supposed to, would’ve been able to discern that he wasn’t a threat to her kid (maybe he’s shaking, maybe he’s sweating, maybe his heart’s pounding; he’d give off some signal that he wasn’t going to, and parasites should be perceptive of this), but instead she reacts as a mother would. That’s good.

Carly Nagisa

Our original main antagonist boys and girls. I really like how Reiko basically became the polar opposite of Shinichi after these past few episodes. Just like how Shinichi is becoming more like a parasite, Reiko is becoming more like a human. This is a good contract that I wish many anime who tries this follow the steps that Parasyte does. Subtle is good, don’t be obnoxious about it or rush it, let it build up so that when it comes full circle it’ll be more insightful and hold some serious impact to the story.

Dandy’s ancestor.

Rob Lucci

It’s good to see some of Jin’s backstory, but the ur-Space Dandy was the highlight. I can definitely see where the people who made this & Bebop went on to make Space Dandy – very similar sense of humor.

DJ JayRap

I got a good laugh out of this episode. Jin’s so far one of my favorites, even though Mugen is one of the best main characters I’ve seen in a while.

Vaioumon

Jin gets some backstory, and that’s cool. But you know what’s really cool? MID-AIR FINISH MOVE: FLYING DRAGON SWORD!

Terrorking

Mic sword. Mic. Sword. The end.

Carly Nagisa

So why exactly do all the boys go after Fuu? No really, she is incredibly plain. Then again, maybe they’re just hoping they don’t get tricked like Mugen and Jin do with older women. Also, best sword attack name ever.

The only eye-grabbing part of this garbage

DJ JayRap

I slept through this again. I think there’s a pattern here.

Terrorking

I have a place for this episode to return to: the dump. And I ain’t talking about garbage.

Carly Nagisa

I zoned out of this one so I don’t know what is happening here. I just know that it was completely pointless and this scene is pretty….lewd.
