ow my finger

Rob Lucci

Gotta say, Trunks getting upstaged so quickly is pretty great and tones down what he did to Frieza. Goku came out looking like a badass.

Tesla Coil

Goku does go out of his way to say Trunks was holding back, so I’d say an episode where my original character Blunks and the protagonist go talk about things only they can understand while all the other characters awe at how awesome Blunks is and how super-definitely he has the powerup that was supposed to be unique to the main character is still kinda lame.

Carly Nagisa

Holding back or not, it’s clear that Goku completely had Trunks dancing in the palm of his hands…or finger in this case. That aside, I like how Piccolo continues to be the most useful and smartest member of the Z-fighters. Just cause the prince of all saiyans has joined our band of misfits, it doesn’t mean the rest of them should be reduced to mediocrity. That’s Yamcha’s job.

DJ JayRap

Hey guys I’m actually alive and stuff. Right, you guys don’t care. Let’s move on.

This episode somewhat tones down the part where Trunks killed Frieza with no hardship to it, but it doesn’t at the same time. Trunks tries to say he’s not going to hold back a killing intent in order to test out Goku, but he held back regardless. Not exactly a prime way to tone down the Mary Sue that Trunks is. Good thing future events actually tone him down.

Terrorking

What I loved about this episode is not how Goku just casually blocked Trunks’ attacks, or their ensuing conversation (though I do like those things). No, what stuck out to me was how the world was never really in any danger. Goku could’ve teleported to Earth at any time and stop Freeza, but he sensed Trunks and decided not to. This also shows that Trunks has some Vegeta in him, where he sometimes lets emotion compel him to act rashly. Had Trunks just kept his power level at 5 and relax, Goku would’ve showed up and he wouldn’t have altered the time stream, but whatever.

How great was it when Trunks revealed his parentage back in the day? Was great, right? It was great.

Akame ga Kill (Extended Edition)

Wave at Kurome’s grave.

Rob Lucci

This is, in fact, the only reference to Kurome in spite of her being a recurring character and her being Akame’s sister. What, you thought Akame would give a shit?!

Carly Nagisa

Boy was it absolutely pointless to have Kurome die before the final battle. And look at that, Wave is continuing to mourn over her death. I sure hope that he doesn’t have a horrible death or leave the empire because of this.

DJ JayRap

“I don’t know what I’m protecting anymore”, probably a really dumb line. Especially when his entire squadron was all about killing nameless people in the first place. He himself could’ve been different from the rest and make attempts to not kill, but just disarm his opponents. Also stopping his fellows in the process that aren’t named Esdeath since Esdeath would’ve maimed him or something. I dunno man. Make them realize what they’re doing is futile and does nothing to preserve peace, get proven wrong later. Something at least, he just feels like Jimmy 2.0 and hasn’t stopped doing that.

Whoops, that requires good writing in the first place.

Terrorking

I don’t care about Kurome and the show in no way tries to make me care later. She’s just another dead Yaeger.

One last titties.

Rob Lucci

Sweet cringe, how I won’t miss thee.

Tesla Coil

Oh my god this scene. Leone is such a clod. She goes from “well, sucks that our friends are dead” to “I’m gonna fuck Tatsumi” in two goddamn sentences. If anyone ever wants to know what we mean when we say AgK has no tone, watch this scene – and don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Carly Nagisa

“So Tatsumi…I heard that Mine is dead and you don’t have any love interest.” This is just one of the many reasons why I absolutely hate harem shit.

DJ JayRap

Oh, Tatsumi is about 2 more points away from completing the Leone route. GUESS SHE’S GONNA DIE NEXT.

Terrorking

Hey, remember when Tatsumi got told by Mine she loves him and was all sad? Remember how Leone knows she loved him? Well, none of that matters. Leone’s gonna get dat dick.

Who names their kid Run

Rob Lucci

Run is the only Yaeger besides Wave left and to this day I have no idea what his in-series purpose was as a character.

Tesla Coil

I forgot this guy existed. As far as I was concerned, he might not have even been a Yaeger; he could’ve been the fifth Rakashaka demon or a Danger Beast or a General Budo for all I knew.

DJ JayRap

I’m mad that I’m a sucker for an enemy with angel wings. I don’t know what it is about it, it’s so cliche, but I’m just a total sucker for it. And yet I hate it in this show. What the hell, Akame ga Kill.

Terrorking

This guy was totally around all along. I can probably count all the lines he’s ever had on one hand. Then the writers had the gall to attempt to give him backstory and motives now that weren’t at all present during the first 20something episodes. That’s hilariously bad.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.40.15

Honest’s derpfaces are a thing of legend

Rob Lucci

I’ve never really commented on Honest. But. Why? Is there really nothing to this guy other than insane glee? Why would you make your main villain no different than any other shitty villain in the series?! Why?!

Tesla Coil

Because, Rob. The writer doesn’t know how to write any other villains.

Carly Nagisa

If you’re gonna be a Saturday morning cartoon villain, could you at least be an entertaining one?

Terrorking

Okay, so Honest wants to rule the empire through his puppet emperor. Okay. But then does it make sense for him to actively be destroying his empire and causing civil uprisings? There’s being evil, and then there’s being cartoonishly evil. This guy’s the latter.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.51.07.png

We’re Gundam now okay then sure

Rob Lucci

I’ve never commented much on this guy. The Emperor clearly isn’t evil, but he’s so painfully gullible that he more or less needs to be convinced that blowing up his people is bad for them. He’s carrying an idiot ball from the start of the show.

Tesla Coil

I sort of understand that a character could be sympathetic if they’re being manipulated into doing evil things. But since Honest has no reason to want half the things he makes this kid do in the first place, I don’t get why I’m supposed to care. Also, it’s pathetic that the writer didn’t know how to show an emperor’s negative influence on their city, so they just had the kid literally blow the shit out of his own city.

Carly Nagisa

I know I’ve been asking this question since they mentioned it at the start but I just have to know. HOW EXACTLY DOES THIS HELP WITH THE EMPEROR’S PLAN FOR FUCKING IMMORTALITY?! Seriously, I know I harp at this but its so unbelievably stupid that I just can’t ignore it.

The Final Boss

Rob Lucci

The dreaded Saved Animation Budget Tron.

Tesla Coil

This thing, which is about the size of the entire city, was sitting inside one of the city’s buildings. Yeah, okay. Sure. It’s a show where you can walk to space and put a marker in the space-ground, what do I care?

DJ JayRap

Mecha anime time? Mecha anime time. Complete with a Kamen Rider main character.

…and I hate this too. There’s something awfully suspicious about this.

Terrorking

So this Imperial Arms is a giant robot. Cool. Now, who made it? If it’s just a robot that was made by someone, how come it only recognized the royal blood and can’t just be piloted by anyone? Because it’s an imperial arms and they choose who use them, right? But if it’s a robot made by someone… ugh. What even ARE imperial arms? We have Esdeath’s imperial arm, which is clearly something that couldn’t have possibly been made by anyone, then we have this which was clearly constructed by someone.

None of this makes any sense and the show only has one goddamn episode left.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.42.21

Somebody hit the nuke button

Tesla Coil

And Esdeath’s there to say “man, I sure do like watching nukes vaporize the city I’m supposed to be protecting.” I think this was the part when we realized this was no ordinary episode of Akame ga Kill. This was an especially bad episode of the worst piece of fiction.

Carly Nagisa

Never change Esdeath, never change.

DJ JayRap

Wait, she’s still alive?

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.43.40

Tatsumi vs. Emperor Zurg

Tesla Coil

This was just the whole episode. Tiny Tatsumi throws himself at a giant mech, giant mech swats Tatsumi away, giant mech vaporizes another section of city.

Carly Nagisa

Are we sure that this isn’t Attack on Titan?

Terrorking

Was there any point to the robot being so large? Nope. Was there any point to it being “the most powerful imperial arms”? Nope. Was there any point to this episode? Nope, since this weapon was only INTRODUCED in this episode (okay, technically at the last minute of last week’s episode). Nothing’s changed.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.49.49

Wave crashes in! (Again)

Rob Lucci

Wave had no character arc. He was there, he liked Kurome, she died, and then he said “fuck it” and decided to fight the empire because it’s the right thing to do. He and Tatsumi had no real relationship with one another throughout the show beyond brief encounters. There’s no satisfying conclusion because there wasn’t even a starting point!

Tesla Coil

I was able to sympathize with Wave. The show constantly built up his similarity to Tatsumi, but whenever Tatsumi would be rewarded with a larger harem, Wave would get yelled at and tortured. If the show had actually focused on Wave, instead of introducing more and more useless characters to kill off in unnecessary ways, maybe this would have been a cool moment.

Carly Nagisa

This could really work if they just devoted like 30% of their harem comedy bullshit to developing Wave and Tatsumi’s relationship instead. Also maybe further developing not Night Raid the Yaegers and Wave’s relationship with them would’ve helped too. Instead, we got this rushed out revelation that just feels sour and uninteresting.

DJ JayRap

Oh hey, the secondary Rider steps in to help out. Two tiny Riders trying to smash a huge-ass Gundam. This is awesome, but Akame ga Kill somehow manages to make this extremely lame. What the butts.

Terrorking

Okay, here’s the dilly. The whole show they’ve had Wave be the everyman, that’s like a less Sue version of Tatsumi. They even have nearly identical Imperial Arms. They’re meant to be mirror images on the wrong side.

Here’s the problem. If this show had been as morally gray as it WANTED to be, this moment where both of our “main characters” put aside their minor conflicting beliefs to focus on the major things with which they agreed would be great. It would be the culmination of the message that “both sides are right/wrong in war”. But because Wave’s side was always bad, and he’s never had problems with Tatsumi, this moment doesn’t actually mean anything.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.52.42.png

GAY DANDY

Rob Lucci

The relationships in this show never really meant much of anything and I get the impression Bulat appeared only because he used to be the owner of Incursio, because as Terror notes below, these two were never really close at all. Garbage.

Tesla Coil

I can handle this show trying to be Sword Art Online or Attack on Titan because I don’t really have much of an opinion on those shows. But man, I like Gurren Lagann. Do not try to be Gurren Lagann. This sort of scene doesn’t work here, because 1) Tatsumi got over Gay Dandy’s death long ago. 2) Gay Dandy’s death doesn’t mean anything to the audience, because we’ve seen like six other main characters die in equally-meaningless ways. 3) Tatsumi liked Mine and Susanoo better – it should be them motivating Tatsumi to do his thing.

Carly Nagisa

I’m pretty sure Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann did this much better than you did AgK.

DJ JayRap

OH MY GOD THEY REMEMBERED GAY DANDY

Terrorking

I liked this. Why? Because for once all the lessons Tatsumi learned in earlier episodes actually mattered and were referenced. He actually USED strategies taught to him by his deceased teammates! For this one moment, the show was almost decent.

Where it messed up was bringing back Gay Dandy. He and Tatsumi were never close, no matter how much the show tells us they are. Tatsumi always hung out with Lubbock or Susanoo more. It should’ve been one of them that showed up.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.53.22.png

Tatsumi activates his inner Gurren Lagann

Rob Lucci

This is a not-so-great Deus Ex Machina because nothing that’s happening matters, none of the relationships that have been in the series mattered, and the outcome doesn’t matter because this cast is shitty and undeveloped. 23 episodes of this garbage. How.

Tesla Coil

Ugh. This could’ve been cool if Gay Dandy was the only character on Night Raid who had died. But that wasn’t even the case when he died. This character arc was doomed from the very start.

Carly Nagisa

See, this is what I am talking about. I swear to god that nobody knows what a Imperial Arms is supposed to be so they just make up whatever they want to fit whatever scenario’s currently in-progress, which is an extremely half-assed way to write.

DJ JayRap

OH MY GOD IT’S FINAL EPISODE UPGRADE

wait a minute this isn’t the last episode. Wait a friggin’ minute, why do I hate this too?

Terrorking

Why’s a dragon wearing a belt?

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.54.26

Tacky-ass powerup saves the day

Rob Lucci

Sure was a boring fight. Why even have a towering mech if you aren’t gonna have a huge mech on mech fight? Why not have a danger beast come out of the ground and tackle the emperor or something? This is just Tatsumi and Wave getting wrecked repeatedly until Spirit Animal Gay Dandy gives Tatsumi a way to hit the weak point for massive damage.

This show sucks.

Tesla Coil

I sort of thought that when Tatsumi found a weak point on the mech, he wouldn’t need a stupid power-up to beat it. But nope, he did. And it turned him gold, just like every other anime ever.

Carly Nagisa

The manga evolution of Incursio was not as obnoxious as the anime version. Still, I believe the anime fight wasn’t as stupid as the manga equivalent.

DJ JayRap

I watch GARO. A lot. I’m in love with character super forms evolving in the final fight and then the upgrade fades away. Frankly, I can always let terrible shows slide by on having the elements of stuff I absolutely love. And yet this show… everything about the characters, the interactions, the vague attempt at leading up to things makes me hate the things I love. I just can’t understand it. All these episodes have had elements I love in shows I watch. I’m a toku nerd. Frankly, I’m a nerd in general that loves even bad things when they do something awesome. This entire sequence would’ve been awesome in my books.

…but it’s not. Akame ga Kill just made me learn to hate the very things I love. I’m not sure how I can recover from this.

Terrorking

Golden Armor Energize!

bhye4zu

Jimmy was too pure for this sinful world.

Rob Lucci

I can’t say it was totally expected that he’d die before the last episode, but he basically sacrificed himself to prevent a giant mech from collapsing on a bunch of people incapable of running.

Tesla Coil

I accidentally spoiled for myself that Tatsumi was going to die. I made a mental note to rant about how killing Tatsumi makes the only possible appeal of Akame ga Kill (a power fantasy for lonely people) pointless, but considering there’s a whole episode ahead where people are going to call Tatsumi the greatest herojesus ever or some crap, I’m sure it’ll still be a viable power fantasy.

Carly Nagisa

So does that mean Akame is the main character after all and not Tatsumi? Oh wow, I never thought that would be the case. You sure fooled me writers, ahahahaha.

Terrorking

Oh look, the main character died and I don’t feel anything. Do you understand how awful your show is if the main character that was meant to be the audience stand-in and sympathetic guy dies and you can’t even elicit a reaction? Pretty awful.

Screenshot 2016-02-13 23.56.11

Oncoming catfight.

Rob Lucci

I always wondered if they’d ever do anything with Esdeath’s character. Nope. She’s just gonna go crazy and killed by Akame, isn’t she?

Tesla Coil

“Hey, Akame… you gonna use that corpse? I only need the lower half.”

Carly Nagisa

“So…wanna have a climatic final battle like Naruto & Sasuke except pairing wars?”

Terrorking

Esdeath: “I wonder if rigor mortis set in yet. *licks lips*

Garbage episode. And this is the penultimate episode. Still garbage.

Parasyte

5 in 1.

Carly Nagisa

This is our true main villain boys and girls, so praise whatever god you worship for this bounty of joy. All joking aside, I really do like how intimidating they manage to make him. Not only do they go back to an old concept that was not utilized ’til now, but they also succeeded in making a threat that Shinichi can’t easily overcome.

DJ JayRap

I actually really love the intimidating vibe this guy gives off. What I especially love is the vibe in how it’s always like Shinichi & Migi vs the world. There’s all these other things going on in the background with side characters moving the plot in their own way, but it always comes down to Shinichi & Migi vs the world. Then there’s this guy who controls not 3, but 5 Parasytes in his body, with Miki being the alternative ‘controller’ to this body. This guy is practically the peak of evolution for Parasytes, or even just a walking embodiment of how much farther they can go. It’s actually kind of perfect. It’s the perfect opponent for Migi and Shinichi because of being multiple consciousness in one body, just like Migi and Shinichi are their own beings. 2-in-1 vs 5-in-1, the 5-in-1 being practically an enhanced version of the main character duo by nature of someone thinking “Oh, a human and parasyte together? Let’s make a whole body with Parasytes exclusively.”

What I also like is that the other controller came with his own weaknesses, like being slow and clumsy as balls with his legs. It really ups the game when they swap to the other controller being what he is, and the soundtrack especially sells it.

I dunno why you’re still reading this post, just get to watching the damn show already.

Terrorking

Here’s what’s cool about this episode. First half is devoted to Shinichi and Migi fighting a parasite that fakes being human (poorly) by having the ability to do facial expressions; last bit is devoted to Ryoko, who is a parasite that seems to be becoming human. Truly human. It’s a clever way to show the difference between a fake and “the real deal”, as our hero would say.

Rob Lucci

This show has continued to stay premium in its quality even though I feel like it’s slowed down a bit. The fight in the forest was pretty well directed overall.

Champloo

Fuu and the thief.

Terrorking

Ichigo fell on some hard times after his anime got canceled.

Joking aside, the ending was quite impactful.

Carly Nagisa

Fu really needs to stop trying to get laid with every “cute” boy that she comes across.

DJ JayRap

I sorta blanked out on this episode. I was paying it mind and not paying it mind, but the times I paid it some mind were always golden moments involving Mugen and Jin. Somehow, Fuu’s part in this felt a little slow, but not bad in any imaginable way.

Rob Lucci

This show is wonderfully somber. The animation and color tone suits it well, and it gives off a really human vibe with its ability to shift between comedy and drama so effectively. The whole thing just flows together really well and builds what feels like a rich and meaningful world.

Shippuden

THIRTEEN MORE EPISODES OF THIS

Rob Lucci

The really depressing part is that, unlike a lot of shitty Naruto filler where the animators steal existing plots from the Manga, this legitimately seems like something Kishimoto would write.

Carly Nagisa

Someone stop this train, I wanna get off.

DJ JayRap

As usual, I slept through Nardo. And I missed nothing. I like where this isn’t going.

Terrorking

If Yukimaru isn’t babbling about a place to return to or homes, he’s screaming his lungs off with the three tails. This arc is garbage.

One Piece

b7x9ipl

no

Rob Lucci

stop

Carly Nagisa

Do something more productive with your life than watch this god awful filler.

Terrorking

I actually watched it this week.
