Poor Frieza.

Rob Lucci

Trunks comes off as a staple Mary Sue. He just completely wrecks Frieza in such a showoff way, he’s a seekrit new super saiyan, he has an edge sword, etc. I know the plot eventually subverts this, but damn, imagine if this was played straight today. It’d be awful.

Terrorking

What’s amusing is Toriyama was able to figure out that Trunks was too perfect in a time when such characters weren’t that prevalent. A lot of modern writers that grew up with dragonball are so enamored with Trunks and how he appeared that they recreate it in their own series, but forget that Trunks spends the rest of the arc failing—the rest of the arc being an actual character, rather than a generic badass.

Carly Nagisa

Mary Sue or not, you have to admit that Trunks was at his absolute coolest with this scene. He had Frieza dancing in the palm of his hands, making all of his efforts meaningless before slicing and dicing him like he was making a fresh salad. Still, I do like how Trunks tried to act normal afterwards, and not the Stoic lone wolf badass that Anime today continue to shove in our face until we’re sick of it.  Had he fulfilled all the points to a Mary Sue quota, then I would be hating this scene a whole lot more.

Tesla Coil

Trunks’ introduction was one of those things I loved as a kid, and then thought was lame as an adult. Like a lot of DBZ, actually. That said, I’ll give credit for Toriyama saving Trunks from stupidity, as Terror pointed out – it’s just his introduction that was dumb.

The remainder of Night Raid.

Rob Lucci

Najenda mourns Susanoo but gives no time of day to consider the feelings of the guy who she’d been around for years who obviously was in love with her. Tatsumi hasn’t relayed this even though Lubbock told him. Chelsea? Sheele? Bulat? Who the fuck are those guys? Those sound like foods!

Terrorking

None of these outfits make any contextual sense. Look how radically different each character’s digs are. Not even a similar time period. What even is this world?

Carly Nagisa

Najenda is still alive yet she purposely used her trump card three times. Now I’m not a doctor or a scientist, but if someone was to use a power up that ensures death after a short number of times….I think it goes without saying that they be in a pool of their own blood now. I know the show explains the reason but do any of you honestly care? No really, they were so quick to kill everyone else off, it comes off being stupidly bias to let Najenda get out of this without any injury or suffer repercussions.

Tesla Coil

I think Night Raid needs a new strategy. They’ve managed to lose six members since Tatsumi showed up – two of which only joined the team to replace other dead people.

The Minister plots.

Rob Lucci

Honest is up to something in the face of the rebellion building strength. By the way, take note of how abruptly this rebellion formed. Within the last, like, 2 episodes, the government is suddenly in full panic mode.

Carly Nagisa

Sure is a good thing we have the Prime Minister who is clearly our comical villain to get us by in our time of suffering.

Tesla Coil

I bet the writer was very proud of himself when he decided to name the evil advisor “Honest”.

Estits.

Rob Lucci

The screen literally starts on her bouncing boobs and slowly pans up. But remember, Esdeath is a complex character with nuances and definitely not meant to be a BDSM hentai insert.

Carly Nagisa

She still didn’t do a pantyshot so there’s that. It’s a terrible consolation to take into account but considering how often these types of anime do it, it’s a blessing in disguise to not go through such torture.

Tesla Coil

I wish we had a gif of this so you could see and understand just how mindbogglingly gratuitous it was. This is the main goddamn villain slaughtering helpless soldiers and the animation budget went to those cancerous growths the artists think constitute breasts.

Screenshot 2016-02-06 23.40.15

Two of the most underdevel-I mean mysterious characters.

Rob Lucci

This conflict only received two or three well spread-out setups in 22 episodes in spite of it being a major point of their “characters”. But, of course, neither Akame nor Kurome really have any character, and they just do what the plot wants them to do with generic dialogue.

Carly Nagisa

The fight that should have happened 8 episodes ago is now finally getting it’s dues. Boy I can’t wait to see who will die this time.

Tesla Coil

I’ll give ’em credit. They tried tone here. The dark background, the abandoned church, all of it gave the right kind of atmosphere for a sad fight between two sisters. Remember the first fight against Crona in Soul Eater, a vastly superior show? It could’ve been cool like that. Instead, we get backstories.

Screenshot 2016-02-06 23.41.56

Rehashed backstory.

Rob Lucci

No running themes or any hard-hitting questions. It’s just another shitty backstory that we’ve already seen. They confront each other over it verbally at first, and there’s some hint of famility among the two, but the show made such a hyped conflict so underwhelming in terms of character development that this is all a waste of time.

Terrorking

20+ episodes and we’re only now being force-fed crucial backstory that motivates these two central characters, and then their relationship comes to a head in this episode. These are revelations and reminiscence that could’ve been sprinkled over the earlier episodes, instead of wacky hijinks.

Carly Nagisa

With these frequent backstories and flashbacks, I’m honestly getting motion sickness from this show. Also, didn’t we already get the brief backstory between the two like twice in several eps in their prospective? Seems really redundant to try and fill the gaps now of all times you had the chance.

Tesla Coil

I don’t know what Rob and Terror are talking about, we’ve been shown this backstory before. …Which means these flashbacks provided absolutely nothing, aside from hiding the fact that the fight choreography is awful

Screenshot 2016-02-06 23.49.01

Okay what the fuck

Rob Lucci

Yes, in this fight that had been foreshadowed since episode 2 as a confrontation between siblings who we learn used to be close to one another, we needed a random mech DANGER BEAST to interrupt the fight for a good thirty seconds so Kurome’s shitty puppets could die. Quality. No way Akame could’ve killed those! Nope. No way.

Terrorking

Danger Beast Plot Convenience. That’s all this thing was.

Carly Nagisa

Not even the most generic of JRPGs would have such a lack of direction with it’s time setting quite like Akame ga Kill. Seriously, how is this a danger beast? I thought the Dangr Beasts so far were abominations of nature that went wild and did whatever they want. This thing look like it was artificially created by Frankenstein’s idiotic and flamboyant little brother.

Tesla Coil

“The Danger Beast must have sensed our fighting spirit and attacked!” said one character, giving more insight as to wtf a Danger Beast was than the previous 21 episodes had in total. …After about two minutes in to what should have been the most meaningful fight in the whole show.

Screenshot 2016-02-07 01.12.04

Wave interferes

Rob Lucci

And then Wave just sits there after five seconds of “STOP, NO” at the fight. Shows how much you love Kurome!

Terrorking

Hate to say this, but the manga handled this better. Wave shows up, gets his ass kicked by Tatsumi, but wills himself to his feet and stops the fight. He then convinces Kurome to go with him and that’s the end of the fight. Here, he shows up just to stop and watch as she pointlessly…

Carly Nagisa

So tell me again….how is Wave’s armor suppose to be the superior version to Tatsumi’s armor?

Tesla Coil

To anyone watching this episode right now… well, first off, why? Secondly, check the background for that thirty-foot-tall mechanical zombie corpse. You won’t see it because everyone forgot about it an instant after Akame Ga Killed it.

Screenshot 2016-02-06 23.53.56

oh noooooooooo

Rob Lucci

Every new death means we’re closer to this show being over. I’m all for this.

Terrorking

… dies. Why is the death pointless? Well, what character development does it prompt? None. We know from earlier episodes that Akame cares about people dying on the insides. How does Kurome’s death advance the plot? It doesn’t. Did her death bring a conflict to its resolution? Not really, since the animosity between sisters BARELY got any focus whatsoever.

Carly Nagisa

You couldn’t give me the double suicide death scene? Granted, I don’t hate Akame but someone needs to put her out of her misery by being in this show. What bothers me about this whole conflict is that the show talks about the sword being the cause for Kurome’s pain and suffering as she was physically too weak to use it. If that was true, then it sure as hell would have been appropriate to let Kurome’s katana to have a trump card that basically make her an immortal zombie. In the manga, it’s clearly the drugs that are taking it’s toll on Kurome, and the sword was just consuming her in a metaphorical sense rather than a literal one. So with that in mind, you can understand Kurome better as she tries to push herself to be an equal to her big sister. Here, it comes off being inconsistent and utterly redundant considering how many plot devices we have already.

Tesla Coil

And then Akame killed her little sister. Shock and awe, considering the title of the episode was “KILL THE YOUNGER SISTER”.

Screenshot 2016-02-06 23.55.08

Dead waifu #264446.

Rob Lucci

Now Wave knows how it feels. While Tatsumi finally gets the Good Ending to the Akame route, Wave made a fuck up by not making a real attempt to interfere, landing him with the Bad Ending for the Kurome route. Scrub.

Terrorking

If you want to see Wave get the good ending, check out the manga. Then hate me for making you read the more-awful-than-the-anime manga.

Carly Nagisa

The managa is clearly setting for Kurome and Wave to suffer just so the writer can say fuck you for liking anyone other than Mine and Esdeath.

Tesla Coil

“I swear. I don’t even know why we’re fighting anymore,” said Wave. Well, Tatsumi and Akame do, and yet, they still let Wave get away instead of stabbing him with the instant-death sword. Best assassins.

THE FINAL BOSS

Rob Lucci

I’m rooting for this thing to blow up and kill everybody.

Terrorking

Episode was meant to be emotionally significant, but Kurome and Akame’s relationship was never developed or shown. To put this into perspective (and I won’t use a series tremendously better than Akame), imagine if the only bit about Itachi’s connection to Sasuke we knew was from when Kakashi asked the team 7 kids what their goals were. You know, that time Sasuke said “My goal is to kill a certain someone…”and then years later in Part 2, Sasuke kills Itachi and then (AND ONLY THEN) does he reminisce on the good times he and Itachi had before Itachi massacred everyone. It would hardly be a moment leading to an emotional catharsis. That’s why this episode fails. Too many episodes focused on random women falling for Tatsumi (and being maimed by equally random villains), and not enough focused on both sisters.

Carly Nagisa

When you see the joke in Terror’s explanation, you’ll start to laugh at the irony aspect. You’ll laugh then show absolute rage at Kishimoto being a hack.

Parasyte

Screenshot 2016-02-07 00.20.40

Mr. Skeletal welcomes Shinichi.

Rob Lucci

A three-part parasyte is an interesting concept, and we seem to be moving to a point in the plot where the real world is becoming more and more exploited and exposed by the parasytes. I dunno if this is gonna be super-shonen-y with its conclusion, but it’s still maintaining a highly quality even if I feel as though the pace has slowed since Kana died.

Vaioumon

The plot maybe seems like it’s going to start moving towards actually fighting the parasytes, which I’m all for. Every episode can’t just be “Shinichi ponders his humanity again while some stuff happens in the background.” Now he’s decided to fight, and just in-time since he’s begun to be targeted by the group that’s slowly taking over the local government.

Terrorking

Most important bit this episode is the detective calls Shinichi a freak and says he’s just a regular human, therefore he cannot be involved in all this. Migi remarks that’s just how humans are, and Shinichi’s forced to face this reality.

Also, a concept that got brought up earlier about multiple parasites sharing the same host body returned.

Carly Nagisa

Oh hey it’s the same guy who crushed that mafia gang like it was a video game. Good to see him finally face off with Shinichi. Now we can have a battle between Superman and Darkseid (if you thought I was gonna use Doomsday then shame on you.). If you’re a marvel fan then Spiderman vs Venom, if you don’t like comics in general then shut up.

EUROPEANS ARE EVERYWHERE

Rob Lucci

The best way to describe this show so far is that it has a lot of personality to it and that the gags are low-key but really funny and really well done, using a mixture of fluent animations, good voice acting, and having a good sequence of events. I can’t strictly call it a comedy because it’s had several somber moments thus far or just general moments of insight, but it’s something. The cast plays off each other really well.

Vaioumon

Many are the show where a goal is established, but then mostly never touched upon beyond a couple lines. Few are the show that are great to watch anyways. In this ep our trio has to play tour guide to a wacky foreigner. We learn over the course of the episode that the man came to Japan to be in a place where he could be himself, but he soon has to return to his former life. Our touch on the goal is him pointing Fuu in a new direction at the end of the ep.

Terroking

What do you mean Europe is sexually repressed and Japan is sexually progressive? What is this strange bizarro world.

Carly Nagisa

I’m not gonna beat the horse again and tell you why exactly this show is well made and how deep it goes to what it tries to tell without it being pretentious or suffocating to the viewer. I will mention the fact that Fu is clearly superhuman as she ate the amount of food a typical Saiyan eats and yet was able to burn it off in a span of a short jumpcut. It’s crazy isn’t it?

Shippuden

oh hey three tails

Rob Lucci

You could fit this arc’s content into like five episodes I swear to God it’s all awful

Terrorking

Get ready for Yukimaru to scream and fire chakra lasers every episode until this arc comes to an end.

Carly Nagisa

Why is this show still going?!?!?!

One Piece

b7x9ipl

Yeah we’re doing this again

Rob Lucci

This arc is so painful to watch weekly.

Carly Nagisa

I feel sorry for the suckers wh
