Vegeta’s new style.

DJ JayRap

Pink shirts are for the manliest of men. Especially if they say BADMAN on the back.

Terrorking

He’s a baaaaaaaaaaaaaadmaaaaaaaaaaaan. I apologize for the R.Kelly reference.

Carly Nagisa

Could be worse Vegeta, Bulma could have actually given you Yamcha’s old training outfit if he didn’t clean out his stuff.

Tesla Coil

Yamcha freaks out this episode as if he doesn’t understand the process. All of Goku’s friends charge at the threat, get killed effortlessly, Goku arrives late, kills the threat, Dragonballs, repeat.

Rob Lucci

Vegeta and Bulma were made for each other.

Night Raid plans to save Tatsumi.

Rob Lucci

why is this show named after Akame

Tesla Coil

Watch in excitement as the three living members of the harem argue over who gets to save the boring protagonist with no likable characteristics. Also none of them mention Lubbock, who is dead.

Carly Nagisa

The hypocrisy within this scene alone angers me more than Mine’s capable of channeling Pumpkin Power.

Tatsumi is an ass machine.

Rob Lucci

What do these women even see in Tatsumi? The show really isn’t written in a way that he can plausibly be referred to as a true Sue when you compare it to textbook examples like Kirito, but he’s still an extremely bland character. This is a problem with most harem protagonists; They don’t have backbones but inexplicably do well in tense situations, they’re pure despite being 15-17 year old males with a parade of women after them, and they don’t have anything really distinctive about them.

Tesla Coil

My god I hate harem shows. Why is harem a genre?! I think I hate it more when it’s hiding behind the guise of an action show. If AgK was being honest, Tatsumi would have a giant neon sign saying “THIS IS YOU” and all the women would just be like “Kyaa, viewer-sama~.”

Carly Nagisa

I don’t think I really understand what the appeal with harem shows. If the MC is suppose to be a self-insert of a total badass, why do they make them so terrible and obnoxiously pure and innocent/ignorant? I’m pretty sure the majority of the people who like this stuff would be a jiggalo or pick a girl and stick with them. Either be realistic or don’t do harems.

Attack of the Ga Kills.

Rob Lucci

I really got an Attack of the Clones coliseum scene vibe from all of this. Buncha villains sitting in an overly stylish coliseum to overlook an execution. Also it’s shit.

Tesla Coil

Hey, art directors! Your main character is about to be publicly executed. Bright white, blue, yellow and red is a good colour scheme for a circus, not a gladiatorial stadium. And maybe don’t have the sky bright blue and sunny. It’s pathetic that the only time this show doesn’t try to be as grimdark as possible is the only time it should.

Carly Nagisa

This is basically just one step from being an accurate scene of a Saturday morning cartoon’s villain in the 80s.

irlm3cw

Subtle.

Rob Lucci

Maybe I was wrong about the Sue thing. Even most Jesus Sues don’t pull this.

Terrorking

I think this shot encapsulates the most what this show is. There’s Tatsumi on a cross, showing how important he is, but the audacity to use this imagery shows just how inflated this show’s opinion of its quality is. It thinks it’s being profound, when it’s being asinine. Next, we have a shot of Esdeath, but angled from the ground so we can see her massive mammoth mammaries and ass. This is emblematic of the show’s insistence that its characters mean something (we’re below Esdeath, according to the angle), while also trying to show off their sexy women curves. Or whatever. 10/10 screenshot.

Tesla Coil

“Hey you, lonely 20-something man watching this show alone in his parents’ basement! You are Jesus, and this dominatrix is in love with you! Isn’t that awesome?!”

Carly Nagisa

Harem Jesus, he died for your awful harems and tropes. All joking aside, this scene is pretty awful for a multitude of reasons. I can ignore them all because it did one good thing….it didn’t give us a pantyshot of Esdeath or show her butt through hr hair.

DANGERBEAST AIR MANTA

Rob Lucci

HYPE

Terrorking

This is why this show is garbage. They blew the budget on animating unimportant crap instead of Dangerbeast Air Manta, making him look all QUALITY.

Tesla Coil

The plot just used its TRUMP CARD!

Carly Nagisa

The empire is lucky that Dangerbeast Air Manta isn’t gonna nuke the city to the ground with the missles of justice.

Mine vs. Budo

Rob Lucci

This battle is another one of those examples of fighting in this series being lazily directed. The shot through the cloud at the end is nice, but the fight amounts to a lot of uncreative beamspam with a simplistic and unstrategic solution of “IF I EMOTION HARD ENOUGH I CAN BEAMSPAM HARDER”. Mine already used that to win a fight like two episodes ago.

Tesla Coil

Rob said it. This is just a shorter, less interesting version of Mine’s last fight.

Carly Nagisa

By all logic this should end in a bloodbath, but it’s unfortunate that Mine has pumpkin and this is basically a shonen. Otherwise, we be seeing one of the best one sided fist fights in history and cheering for our “true hero”.

Screenshot 2016-01-30 23.49.57

“On par with Esdeath.”

Rob Lucci

And so we say goodbye to Budo, once-great general introduced last episode now dead. I actually liked his design quite a bit, but, uh… he’s every other villain in this show.

Terrorking

So much for the general on par with Esdeath! What was the point of this character, again? He was introduced last week and died this week. I doubt he even has 15 minutes of total screentime.

Tesla Coil

Imagine how different the show would’ve been if Budo didn’t exist, and Esdeath had been the one to kidnap Tatsumi instead of Budo. Oh, that’s right, it wouldn’t have been any different at all.

Carly Nagisa

The only one to actually do the “on par with Esdeath” gimmick line well is Gay Dandy’s former commander. At least he I could actually believe that he stood a chance…back before Esdeath proved that she has no equal. This defeat was terrible and boring. If you’re not gonna use this excuse you have with being anime original now to make a good fight then don’t bother.

Esdeath literally freezes time ARE YOU SERIOUS

Rob Lucci

There is absolutely nothing about this that makes sense. Esdeath’s never been shown to freeze the air around people and even if she could she logically would get stuck like everybody else if she froze an entire perimeter. “Freezing time” is a metaphor, not something that’s actually possible!

Terrorking

It’d be like if a guy had water powers and then suddenly said: “MY SECRET POWER IS TO DROWN YOU IN DEBT!”

Tesla Coil

Literally freezing time is stupid, yes. But what’s worse – yes, there is something worse – is that Esdeath says her trump card is to “freeze time and space“. Freezing time has a meaning, but what does it mean to freeze space?! To metaphorically freeze space would mean to stop movement, which is what freezing time does. To literally do it would be to create ice, which Esdeath’s base power is!

Carly Nagisa

At least she is fitting the whole Ice pun gimmick she has……this is still pretty awful though.

RIP Susanoo

Rob Lucci

Susanoo kind of grew on me with what little screentime he had, and the dialogue before we last see him is actually pretty legit – he explains why he’s staying behind in a way that works with his very basic personality. It’s too bad nothing else here works because Esdeath exists, but E for Effort instead of F for Fuck You.

Terrorking

It always makes me angry when an awful character kills a fairly decent one. Not because I’m angry that a character that grew on me died (none of these guys have grown on me at all), but because a superior character is wasted for an inferior one. Not the feeling you want to evoke from your reader/viewer.

Tesla Coil

When two Imperial Arms users fight, one of them must die. That was the first goddamn thing we learned about Imperial Arms. If there was any rule Akame ga Kill could keep consistent, I figured it would be the one about killing as many characters as possible! But nope, Najenda just leaves her Imperial Arms Susan to die for her.

Carly Nagisa

I really hate this. Like really now, didn’t Najenda basically give her LIFE to try and defeat Esdeath. So to have her survive while Susanoo dies frustrates me to no end. This is just insulting to Najenda’s sacrifice and Susanoo overall. They should have been the ones to have fought Budo instead. At least it would make more sense as to why Budo loses that fight.

Last kiss

Rob Lucci

Mine and Tatsumi’s relationship developed so abruptly and was so underdeveloped that I can say it left any impact. Mine is defined by a trope (tsundere) that’s been run so far into the ground that the basic codifiers are eye-rollers. The show plays it straight.

Tatsumi’s shit at this visual novel, by the way. He keeps getting the bad ending and he chooses terrible dialogue trees with Esdeath.

Terrorking

When people say the manga is better than the anime, they’re lying/delusional/wrong. In the manga, Mine survived oneshotting General Budo, and then went on to be Jimmy’s girlfriend. That’s asinine, since her power would become a canon black hole. “Why doesn’t Mine just walk into the capital alone and blast everyone? She’d be in incredible danger then!”

I support the anime’s decision to kill her off here. Now, with all that said, that doesn’t mean the death was good. For a death to mean something, the character has to mean something: Mine doesn’t.

Tesla Coil

I have several questions. 1) Why did Mine die?! Her Pumpkin beam spam was way more subdued this episode than when she fought Seryu, so that shouldn’t have killed her. She didn’t even use the TRUMP CARD lightsaber. 2) Why should we care about a relationship that lasted three episodes tops and consisted purely of Mine and Tatsumi being unwilling to admit they liked each other? 3) This show sucks.

Carly Nagisa

Terror is right about this whole ordeal, but he is forgetting one key part. In the manga Mine does survive, but she ends up in a vegetated state for her abuse of Pumpin to the point of destruction. Her pushing her body to extreme exhaustion and “burning her emotions” is what suppose to kill her but not in the manga. At least the anime had the balls to do the right thing and kill her off. I can;t even enjoy this dead…can’t let me have just one victory can you AgK?

Parasyte

3vvebww

The most unnatural laugh.

Terrorking

I was surprised when Migi didn’t try to appeal to logic against the private investigator, but instead chose to appeal to emotion. That requires a level of emotional intelligence that Migi didn’t have in the earlier episodes. Perhaps fusing with Shinichi got some human into him. I would be remiss to leave out that there’s some good character-building going on just by having Fem!Parasite attend a lecture. Maybe Migi isn’t the only parasite exhibiting human behavior.

Carly Nagisa

And we get to see how Shinichi is continuing his descend into being an emotionless monster while Migi starts to become more human. I like this parallel for a bunch of reasons but most importantly the show just manages to really sell me on the transition. I can’t help but be impressed. That said, Ryoko is also showing signs of becoming human. She is certainly a lot more clever than the majority of parasites. Shinichi might be stronger than her, but I would still believe that Ryoko could still kill him with her wits being the key. She had him playing like a violin in their confrontation and would take advantage of his anger to send him to his death.

Rob Lucci

Seeing the Parasyte antagonists develop human behaviour or interests in human behaviour is interesting.

Champloo

OH FOR PETE’S SAKE

Terrorking

I am transfixed by this.

Carly Nagisa

I have no words for this.

Rob Lucci

Literally an episode about Feudal Porn and every scene is hysterical.

Shippuden

Screenshot 2016-01-31 01.19.43.png

Hinata in the spotlight.

Rob Lucci

Guren’s powers are extremely confusing. If she can crystalize things out of liquid and moisture, why can’t she crystalize sweat? She could fuck with her opponent’s skin pretty bad in a fight with that, and we know she’s really powerful. She made a wall of hard crystal that digs, like, several feet into the ground. She can crystalize air! Couldn’t she just crystalize the air around people without touching them since she can already produce crystal out of thin our?

Oh, and Hinata is encased in crystal and somehow lives. If breaking the encasing would shatter her, she’s already dead. Protip to Kakashi and Guren.

Terrorking

“Crystal-style” is quickly becoming the “Nanomachines, son” of Shippuden, because it sure as shit does everything and is never explained.

Further, it makes no sense that Naruto would see a random kid and just up and decide to take him to the village. Further further, this episode was pointless because they’re literally fighting clones of the bad guy, who isn’t in any danger. That means there’s no advancement of the plot going on.

Carly Nagisa

But Rob, you can’t just kill characters who are confirmed to still be alive in the manga through filler. Now that would be silly.

One Piece

They do this gag twice

Rob Lucci

This is trying really hard to be worse than Naruto, but I don’t find myself asking quite as many questions. It’s mostly just really, really boring.

Carly Nagisa

And they say that the timeskip ruined Sanji’s character…HA!
