“I’m my father’s son… and we need to kill time… and this is filler… and Toei is cheap…”

Rob Lucci

The animation improved. That’s cool, I ‘spose. Gohan sucks, btw. Camper scrub trying to time out the match.

Tesla Coil

Yeah, the animation did get better. And it was pretty awesome of Gohan to try to sacrifice himself to make sure Frieza died. I’m surprised Bulma didn’t throw Piccolo off the ship and fly off while Gohan was out, though.

Terrorking

That’s all fine and good, but nothing really happened, unlike the last episode.

Carly Nagisa

This is all filler we could have done without. Stop lying to me Kai about cutting the bullshit!!! Also Frieza is still a giant moron.

DJ JayRap

The episode has great animation compared to previous ones. Except moments where Frieza’s face goes completely off-scale and then grows the mightiest chin one would ever see.

rip

Rob Lucci

Maybe you should wear some goddamn armor, Leone.

Tesla Coil

Oh no! The one character who can heal herself got caught up in an explosion! How will she survive?

Terrorking

I like how she isn’t at all singed.

Carly Nagisa

I really hope she dies, cause that would be swell.

Bohls’ last moments.

Rob Lucci

The show gets points for this one. Sure, Bohls still wasn’t all that well developed, but he clearly had remorse for what he did and only worked for his family. The scene’s well shot, the voice acting’s good, the song used is good, it’s overall effective. Too bad this didn’t last.

Tesla Coil

I’m gonna go into way more detail than anyone asked for here, because I actually thought this scene was incredible. First off, it actually used mood whiplash effectively. Bohls had a nice little happy scene with a lost child, and then it transformed into Chelsea stabbing him in the back, and suddenly became sad. That’s two moods that AgK actually set and transitioned between properly. And with the stuff Rob mentioned working properly, it made me feel the sad it was trying to convey.

Then there’s the characters. Chelsea, one of the most morally-grey heroes kills Bohls, one of the most morally-grey villains. After seeing countless murders of characters who were so one-dimensionally evil, AgK did it. It actually presented the grey-vs-grey morality that it was trying to set up since episode one.

And the death itself! Chelsea used actual assassination techniques, with abilities she’d shown earlier in the show, instead of pulling out a new TRUMP CARD. It was quick and effective, exactly what an assassination should be.

For one scene that was probably only around two minutes, AgK was a good show.

Terrorking

I hate to admit it, but that was a good scene. I was really angry that Bohls died to a character that had so much less to her than he did, and then I realized maybe that was the point. This is the first time a death wasn’t broadcasted an episode before (or during the death episode) by having the character suddenly get backstory, and instead they showed us Bohls’ history and loved ones way earlier. Finally some competence. I’ll give you this one, AgK.

Carly Nagisa

Everyone else said something really good about this scene, but I can’t stop thinking how OOC Esdeath keeps being even in a flashback/madeup scenario. That aside, I think the death was really well done and would have been perfect…had it been any other show. Unfortunately it’s not, so AgK still ends up muttering it up after Bohls dies. Like seriously, don’t anyone know the concept of teamwork when pulling off these fucking assassinations?

DJ JayRap

For one moment I actually liked this show. For just this moment. Just those 2 or so minutes. It was an actually good scene from a show that has the most awful everything else. Thankfully Aar already covered all the things I’d want to say about gray morality between these two characters, so I’ll close my thoughts on this with; I never imagined this show could be good in any remote sense.

A young Akame and Kurome.

Rob Lucci

Hey, look, I don’t actually mind tragic backstory if it’s done well, but I’m starting to think this show doesn’t get how you do tragic backstories. It’s like they think that if you just make character’s lives shitty and give them no introspection, it comes off as… trite.

Tesla Coil

AgK had its moment. Back to the normal junk – an unnecessary tragic backstory created by the most one-dimensional villains anyone could ever design.

Terrorking

Hey, is that Frieza?

Carly Nagisa

Even Frieza needs money to pay the bills. That aside, I think this backstory was pretty pointless. We already known Akame’s side, and this doesn’t really flesh out Kurome despite it’s supposedly being from her perspective. All it proves that the government is evil, drugs are bad, and even as children the AKAME GA KILL sisters were still amazing back then.

DJ JayRap

Annnnnd this show goes back to being awful in a matter of seconds. Thanks guys.

Gotta fill that villain quota.

Rob Lucci

Moments after the death of the show’s only sympathetic villain, we’re introduced to about 3-4 comically evil bad guys from Akame and Kurome’s past. It’s like the show is trying to apologize for doing something right. What the fuck.

Tesla Coil

At least one of them is voiced by Frieza.

Terrorking

Yes, it’s Frieza. Hey, did you realize that I don’t actually care about any of their tragic backstories? It’s hard to when EVERYONE has a tragic backstory.

Carly Nagisa

This backstory is still better than Esdeath’s, but that’s still no excuse for how bad this one is.

Screenshot 2016-01-03 02.18.03.png

There are three things wrong with this image.

Rob Lucci

Akame has random Tatsumi lust, Leone isn’t dead, and I see no Donald Trump in this scene. Build the Wall. Keep the DANGER BEASTS out.

Tesla Coil

All this is happening, by the way, while Chelsea tries to chase down and kill Kurome – one of the most dangerous characters this show has created. I’m sure she’d like some backup in case, I dunno, the master of the undead doesn’t die so easily.

Terrorking

So much for Leone being injured! It’s almost like her getting caught in the blast was pointless and existed merely to create a facsimile of drama, but that’s crazy talk, right?

Carly Nagisa

“SON OF A BITCH! One job Agk, ONE FUCKING JOB AUGH!!” Escaping from my anger fit, I don’t like how everyone is lollygagging while Chelsea is putting herself in danger. Aren’t these guys aside from Tatsumi suppose to be veteran killers? You would think they’d mobilize a lot faster and get their shit together.

A WALL SO HIGH NOT EVEN DANGER BEAST AIR MANTA CAN CROSS IT

Rob Lucci

drump2016

Tesla Coil

Rob’s been saving this one. I think he should’ve kept it for a few more episodes.

Terrorking

Well it’s relevant almost every episode.

Carly Nagisa

I still think he should have waited until we gotten Esdeath’s trump card. It’s is the most bullshit one in existence.

DJ JayRap

Rob Lucci

In typical Good Writing™ fashion, Chelsea’s thin backstory is shoved to us moments before her death, in a shallow attempt to give her something resembling a character profile before offing her. Y’know, some of the best television characters of all time don’t have backstories, because they have personal-Ah fuck it

Tesla Coil

“Person picks up weapon, kills evil guy” isn’t much of a backstory for a show where every character kills evil guys with weapons.

Terrorking

Hey look, pretty flowers.

Carly Nagisa

I think I get the formula now. Someone has a flashback, it usually means that they’re gonna die or suffer real bad. Akame and Esdeath are the only exception cause they are too perfect to die. Also, I don’t like how her backstory has her acting like Mine. Chelsea is supposed to be better than that god damn it.

vg12hfo

Ssshhh It’ll all be over in seven episodes.

Rob Lucci

Got no real complaints on this except how comically adept Chelsea is at imitating Bohls. I’m pretty sure she did something similar when screwing around in an earlier episode, but they just say “Tatsumi had personality profiles” as the explanation here. Her abilities, much like her character, aren’t fleshed out at all.

Tesla Coil

It would’ve been cool if Chelsea understood Bohls from watching him die… but I guess we’re just not going to acknowledge that one good scene anymore, are we, AgK?

Carly Nagisa

Couldn’t she also snap her neck while doing this? You know to double tap her real good. Why stop there? After piecing her neck, cut off her head, smash the body to a million pieces, burn it, and then scatter the ashes across the entire country. An assassination always double tap, but AgK has taught me that you have to overkill your opponent to make sure they stay dead.

DJ JayRap

Oh boy, this image already looks like it’s ready to go places. Bow-chika-bow-wow. No but really, Chelsea’s shtick in this particular scene is “Jimmy gave me character profiles for the one moment or two he hung out with these guys”. That’s it. Not that she watched the guy die right in front of her and constructed something off it.

aqnbl7w

The power of Kurome’s Snacks.

Rob Lucci

So, the bullshit explanation for her survival is that she got “Super snacks” that make her “really strong”, further handwaved by Kurome saying “I DUNNO LOL” when asked how she survived. So the previous two explanations were made entirely pointless because she couldn’t even use the snacks as an excuse for her inexplicable survival.

The writer wrote two sentences and didn’t look back and say “Hey, that second sentence invalided the point of the first. I should fix that.” This explains a lot.

Tesla Coil

Is that what happened? I thought she was just diabetic.

Terrorking

Oh sweet Jesus, that face.

Carly Nagisa

I’m pretty sure drugs don’t work like that. It would have made more sense if Zombie Girl was alive due to her Imperial Arm’s trump card. But fuck that, let’s make some convoluted excuse so we can show off that trump card another time and make it make absolutely no god damn sense.

Screenshot 2016-01-03 02.17.02

That hair must’ve been a bitch to manage.

Rob Lucci

Of all her journies, of all the people she’s confronted, everything, her last thoughts were of Tatsumi, a guy who tried to look at her naked in a hot spring the day the two met. I see nothing wrong with this. Carry on.

Tesla Coil

A scene miles better than anything AgK could ever dream of includes only Bohls and Chelsea? Better kill off both Bohls and Chelsea in the same episode. Wouldn’t want AgK to accidentally become good again.

Terrorking

Looks like Chelsea’s been… disarmed!

Carly Nagisa

If only someone would have given her a hand! Fuck this show, fuck them for trying to make Chelsea competent and the closest they’re ever gonna get to making a good “Hero” in the show. Also fuck this symbolic death.

qeallup

I guess you could say she couldn’t stay a-HEAD.

Rob Lucci

I could make a joke, but this death is another symptom of the show’s incompetence. They introduce the only backstory she ever gets moments before she’s brutally murdered. I get that the show wants me to care because she’s a designated main character…

But having seen compelling characters and understanding the difference between what is essentially cardboard and a 3-dimensional character, it’s nigh-impossible to get attached.

Tesla Coil

And she’s still wearing those damn headphones.

Terrorking

If my flippant tone hasn’t told you yet, I don’t care about this character.

Carly Nagisa

No seriously, when in the hell does this show take place in?!?!! Also, if Leone had just died like she supposed to, we could have had Chelsea live longer. Just saying.

Parasyte

Screenshot 2016-01-03 01.56.51.png

Just strolling by

Rob Lucci

This episode was pretty ruthless – Shimada was terrifying (see above image that would honestly work as a creepy painting on its own) but the show went an interesting route by using a practical long-distance rock snipe to take him down.

Good overall.

Carly Nagisa

This is why you always carry acid with you. You never know when you’ll need it to fend off against psychotic murdering parasites. All jokes aside, I like this episode and the tones it tried to tell. The conversation with Migi and Shinichi was spot on, Shinichi himself showing that he’s still hasn’t fully lost his humanity yet, and the method of killing a parasite was all good. Nice one Parasyte, you earn a platinum star.

Terrorking

The point of this particular episode seems to be that Shinichi is still human, even underneath that cold exterior. The grisly murders shock him to his core. Also, I love how quick and often mundanely these fights end. Makes them feel like there’s danger in them

DJ JayRap

This episode shrugs off all the moments of Shinichi becoming something inhuman by having him break down for a moment at the idea that Murano was dead. This gives the sense that he’s still human because he has actual feelings on screen, despite everyone else– in entirely different episodes even– telling him he’s strong, or made of steel, or an empty husk.

And so the episode ends with hair-pulling becoming the new handshake greeting.

Champloo

Jin and Mugen.

Rob Lucci

Every second was great. The show has an actual style to it, the opening is one of the better openings I’ve seen in terms of style and music, and the show itself was really fluid animation.

I’ve never seen this show before but I’m completely sold on it. Tons of personality, a convincing environment jump, clever directing/transition techniques that helped the pacing flow correctly, etc. Watanabe at his best, here.

Carly Nagisa

Now this is a real treat and that’s all I’m going to say about it. What are you doing still reading this blog? Go watch this series, it’s REALLY good.

Terrorking

Show’s got style.

DJ JayRap

I’ve never seen this show before either, so this is gonna be a fun ride for me. The first episode’s already sold me. That opening was probably one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time. From the rhythm of Battlecry, to the lyrics, and then the animation of the opening itself. This is backed by the fluid animation, dialogue, and smooth pacing for the episode. I’m pretty stoked for this show, and wonder why I’ve never gone out of my way to watch it.

Shippuden

Steve Blum Ninja.

Rob Lucci

The frog song at the beginning made me want to crawl into myself and cry. Steve Blum rescued me from this fate, but I still have the scars. Also, nothing happened this episode. It moves at the speed of molasses. Even Filler Hell had the grace of occasionally moving quickly since it was a collection of a few dozen mini-arcs. This just hurts.

Carly Nagisa

I hate Naruto fillers for a bunch of reasons that would be too repetitive to explain. You have to be there to truly understand it. Why do the japs love these filler arcs so much?

Terrorking

The cardinal sin of this filler is it’s boring. It’s just BORING.

One Piece

Something something DREADED FILLER VILLAIN.

Rob Lucci

Nothing’s happening.

Carly Nagisa

We’re never leaving filler hell are we?
