Rob Lucci

The most entertaining aspect of this episode, by far, was the banter between King Kai and Kami on how to exploit loopholes in the revival mechanic of the dragon balls. It feels like Toriyama having his characters talk for him and reason why the conclusion of this won’t be a plot hole, but I like it anyway. It’s… different. Oh, and there’s some poorly animated Goku vs. Frieza.

Carly Nagisa

You know, it’s nice to have the side characters discuss the possibilities and ways to abuse a plot device. It’s best to explain these things in a manor that doesn’t sound like pointless exposition. That aside, this fight continues to drag and it sucks. Also, Bulma continues to be the worst person in this show.

Tesla Coil

I actually like the Dragonball exploit talk. It’s nice to see characters who actually question magic rules instead of just going “welp, this is just how it works I guess”. Of course, it brings up the question of why the Earth and Namekian Dragonballs work in basically opposite ways, but oh well. Also, Bulma is still a horrible person.

DJ JayRap

So the characters this time try to figure out how to exploit the rules of revival. It’s great for a lot of reasons because questioning the rules of the magic balls, as opposed to shrugging it off and accepting how it works, is the better way to go. This episode’s pacing proceeds to drill into our minds that this show just has the worst pacing. I’m pretty sure this somehow covered 4 episodes of the Super Saiyan Goku vs Frieza battle. Somehow.

Akame Ga Kill

Kurome’s childhood friend.

Rob Lucci

Who is this man? Nobody knows. Akame says, in shock, “You grew up together!” as if that’s supposed to make the audience care. I don’t.

Carly Nagisa

You know what would be nice? If don’t introduce characters who are already dead or are about to be and expect us to care about them. If you don’t attempt to actually introduce characters beforehand and develop them, then we won’t care if they live or die. Simple, no?

Tesla Coil

I was disappointed to learn that this character was not, in fact, someone who was introduced in the 9-or-so episodes I missed.

DJ JayRap

Who the frig is this mothertrucker? Another stellar moment of “INTRODUCE RANDOM ‘IMPORTANT’ CHARACTER OUT OF NOWHERE”. Thanks guys.

Donger Beast Expand

Rob Lucci

Air Manta just got some competition.

Carly Nagisa

So what exactly is special or dangerous about a regular gorilla?

Tesla Coil

It’s a gorilla. That’s its power.

DJ JayRap

DONGER BEEST DONKEY KONG ARRIVES

Beware Donger Beest Airmanta, your place is about to be taken from you.

Screenshot 2015-12-12 23.37.01.png

Kurome’s Puppets.

Rob Lucci

Why aren’t any of these puppets characters we’ve seen before? Tatsumi’s friends? Sheele? Bulat? Anything? Not even a dead villain or something? Just randos from the author’s scrapbook of characters he couldn’t fit in otherwise? We’re over halfway through this shit. Moments of impact are necessary.

Carly Nagisa

Remember what I said above? Yeah fuck that, I’m not even going to bother lecturing these “writers” if they’re just going to do the exact same thing again in less than five minutes. This is something I’d expect within the first few episodes, not the introduction to the final battle. Fuck this show.

Tesla Coil

This is around the point in the episode where Kurome herself tells the heroes(?) that their best chance is to attack Kurome instead of the dead puppets. The main characters do not do this, and attack the puppets one by one.

God, there’s so much wasted potential here. Akame, the hero with a sword that kills. Kurome, the villain with a sword that brings people back from the dead. And yet they’re not even fighting each other! This should be Akame’s fight from start to finish. Like… if all the Night Raid characters were getting the crap beaten out of them by the zombies while Akame fought Kurome, and the only chance to save them was for Akame to kill her sister before Night Raid all died.

DJ JayRap

My colleagues covered it pretty well just now. There’s a lot of wasted potential with a power like this. I’m fine with a couple of randoms, but when Kurome says she’s got more puppets available, you get the feeling it’d actually be ominous, right? No, random giant frog. It’s not the Night Raid members who died, it’s not even Jimmy’s little friends who died in episode 1. What a waste.

Also, I’m certain the writers failed to figure out that they could’ve had Kurome and Akame trying to ga kill each other while everybody else was durdling with the zombies.

Leone loses an arm.

Rob Lucci

This doesn’t seem to deter her whatsoever, so part of me wonders why it even happened. She still kicks ass without it. What’s her character, anyway? Like, I get that she fits the “Crude but easy to talk to slightly older woman” role in the harem dynamic (Love Hina dun did this shit 25 years ago!) but is there anything beyond her archetype? Just the aesthetics and fighting? Okay.

Carly Nagisa

Hey Leone, why don’t you use that super amazing healing factor you have. You mean it doesn’t heal limbs or any real injury that would make you crippled or dead? You can’t even do Wolverine’s gimmick right. Oh how I wish Kurome had cut off your head with that attack. Maybe then we’d at least be getting somewhere.

Tesla Coil

No, “slightly older woman” is Najenda’s role in the harem. Leone is the catgirl. Speaking of Najenda, I get the feeling that the artist realized he really liked amputee women while drawing all of Najenda’s focus lately and decided to make another one.

DJ JayRap

Leone’s just the ‘hot ass older sister’ character that barely dresses. She’s also the cat girl, so she fills up two roles at once. Better than being just one harem archetype, amirite?

Esdeath is distracted by a hitsquad.

Rob Lucci

That guy in the background doesn’t even look like he’s sticking his tongue out menacingly. It just looks like it’s that way all the time. I kinda feel sorry for him. With how mean spirited this universe is, he probably had no choice but to join this thug squad. Also, there’s a blind guy in the back too. How does he fight.

Carly Nagisa

I kind of zoned out here, so I’m going to assume that Esdeath murdered them in a horrific way while talking about Jimmy.

Tesla Coil

“It’s a bunch of brainless thugs,” says Esdeath, making this assumption based on how every single one of these characters looks like a stereotypical brainless thug from a cartoon.

DJ JayRap

I don’t remember this happening. Well, I remember seeing “LOVE”, but I don’t remember any of this.

How Team Rocket survives.

Rob Lucci

Wave calls Kurome vulnerable with his flashbacks showing her eating sweets as if that’s her character flaw. I hate everything.

Carly Nagisa

Actually show us some of Kurome’s weak spots rather than trying to say the sister of the almighty Akame isn’t capable of defending herself. Show, don’t tell.

Tesla Coil

That hurt him a lot more than it would’ve hurt any other character. Also I wasn’t actually listening to what Wave was saying, but I’ll take Rob and Carly’s word for it.

DJ JayRap

So how come he gets hurt more than anybody else taking a hit like that? Also, that’s not a character weakness, writers. Just go away already.

Screenshot 2015-12-12 23.51.34.png

Incoming vore.

Rob Lucci

I’ll give the show this: In one episode, we see a long-tongued frog and a smart whip near female characters, yet there’s no attempt at pandering to the tentacle fetish crowd. +1.

Carly Nagisa

Doesn’t this count as a pinch? The sheer volume of hentai that could evolve from this scene should be more than enough of a punch for Mine’s gun to nuke this thing.

Tesla Coil

A frog! I have a new favourite character!

DJ JayRap

I’m pretty sure this was someone’s fetish down at the office.

Screenshot 2015-12-12 23.52.48.png

Susanoo’s TRUMP CARD. What the fuck am I looking at.

Rob Lucci

-15. What in the unholy fuck is this mess. It doesn’t make sense. Look at that face and how it looks photoshopped on. It’s so bad. Does he have a muscle overcoat with extra muscle? What? My eyes hurt.

Carly Nagisa

This is the last time I’m going to say it but it really would have been better if Susanoo was his own character and not an imperial arms. Maybe then he could have a trump card that isn’t a sin against story design.

Tesla Coil

Maybe, Susanoo, if everyone had been ganging up on the Destacool like Najenda ordered, she wouldn’t have had to sacrifice some of her life force for you to beat it. Also, AgK, don’t rip off Naruto. Naruto isn’t even good.

DJ JayRap

The back is the only cool thing. You know why? Because it reminds me of this. But, as you know, only the other things do it better. Except for Naruto, I guess?

Screenshot 2015-12-12 23.54.08.png

Rest in peace, Frog.

Rob Lucci

How did nobody notice her shooting loud lasers in through the frog? How did Mine not die? Why even have her getting captured by Frog? Even Leone losing her arm will PROBABLY have some sort of consequence. This is just padding!

Carly Nagisa

I’m mad that Mine didn’t die from this.

Tesla Coil

Leone losing an arm will not have any sort of consequence. Her boss has a medieval fantasy robot arm; Leone will get one too.

Screenshot 2015-12-12 23.56.14.png

Damnit Bobby.

Rob Lucci

I hope they all died. Bohls would be a hero.

Carly Nagisa

Cue plot device that saves them in the last second. Hell forbid that this show ends right here so we can get something actually GOOD from all this.

Tesla Coil

And that’s how one villain killed two of the main characters, one of whom can heal herself and the other is the one who the show is named after, in a single attack. Clearly this actually happened and will not be undone in the first five minutes of the next episode.

DJ JayRap

Smart tactic by this guy, it just won’t work by the first five minutes of the next episode.

Parasyte

Screenshot 2015-12-13 00.24.32.png

you okay there bud

Rob Lucci

Yuko’s plot induced stupidity slightly bugged me. She knows Shimada can turn into other people, and her weapon of choice is a bottle of alcohol? Against a thing she knows is a dangerous alien? I dunno, it seemed a bit silly to me. Outside of that, I’m still loving Shinichi’s transformation as a character. It leads to some pretty naturally amusing moments between him and Murano.

Terrorking

This was a great episode. For the previous ones, we saw Shinichi kind of passively changing. What I mean by that is there’s no real conflict to his changing demeanor, but in this one we see the tangibility of those changes. He’s no longer only internalizing his changes, and it makes for some funny situations when he blurts out some of the stuff he’s thinking of.

Carly Nagia

You cannot convince me that Shinichi’s love interest isn’t only there just to remind us of the same message the writers have been beating us to death with since the first episodes. It’s getting kind of tiresome hearing her asking the same question at least once an episode. If I ignore that, I can go back to liking the struggle Shinich is going through with his gradual detachment from his humanity.

Also the last line of the episode was fucking brilliant.

DJ JayRap

“THAT SON OF A BITCH”.

Shinichi’s changes now have more consequences towards the people he interacts with, moreso Murano. Ultimately burying the coffin with that outburst of “SHUT UP!”, it’s pretty much done. He has a better conversation with Migi in this episode as opposed to Murano, and Migi loves this because it’s convenient to him. It’s very telling for Shinichi and Migi’s characters, at least to me.

The alcohol is probably the best idea Yuko can come up with because there’s nothing else convenient enough without causing too much ruckus. Besides, what’s she gonna do, slash the guy with a knife? Throwing the bottle of alcohol while Hideo’s about to go swinging is probably the best option she’s got.

Michiko and Hatchin

Screenshot 2015-12-13 00.56.50.png

“This isn’t goodbye, it’s just see you later.”

Rob Lucci

I’ll be giving my overall impressions in a review post you’ll all see soon-ish, but I really enjoyed this finale and the themes it represented. There were a couple of turns that went how I expected them too, but with a twist on it.

I expected Michiko to realize Hiroshi was a no-good motherfucker, but Hatchin feeling the consequences and carrying on in spite of it due to Michiko’s feeble-mindedness suits the show. Good move on the part of the writers. It all came together pretty well.

Terrorking

Now Hatchin too has a brown baby. Hiroshi’s one funny scumbag. Yes, those are my thoughts on the show. Gotta watch it for yourself.

Carly Nagisa

Satoshi was robbed of his final confrontation with Hiroshi. Should’ve ended it like Cowboy Bebop with them shooting each other and Hiroshi dying. Followed up with an ambiguous ending on whether or not Satoshi survived. Still, I like the ending and I’m going to miss Bootleg Bebop now.

But there’s no time to cry when we’ve got Samurai Champoo in 2 weeks.

DJ JayRap

Man did I love this show. The entire ride was one hell of a joyride. I won’t really say much, it’s just an ending one has to see by themselves. It’s got poignant character conclusions that really give the show the proper feeling of being finished.

Naruto Shippuden

help me

Rob Lucci

Nothing happened this episode. Sasuke won a poorly animated fight against 1000 redshirts Orochimaru somehow hired and Naruto is getting trained by the most annoying family of toads the world has ever known. Oh, and the episode starts with dialogue that sounds like porn if you just listen to it.

Help me

Carly Nagisa

Why the does japan love these fillers again?

DJ JayRap

I still think nothing happened in this episode.

Zoro’s reaction to another filler arc.

Rob Lucci

Toonami butchered one of the best openings in the show and then I get to watch 20 minutes of some filler. Coolio.

Carly Nagisa

We’re never gonna get to Fishman Island at this rate.
