Goku vs. Frieza again

Vaioumon

Gohan finds Bulma. King Kai is bad at sensing things. Goku says he wants to fight. Frieza does half an episode of powering up. Wheeeeeee~

Tesla Coil

I liked the part where it took King Kai 10 minutes of the episode to realize that Namek was actually still there. It’s normally hard to miss a planet. They’re big.

Rob Lucci

I feel like something was lost somewhere for Kai to seriously believe Namek was blown up. That was confusing nonsense. Also, Bulma is a bitch.

DJ JayRap

I still feel like nothing happened in this episode. Eventually there was a weird moment where Goku looked ridiculously young, and then back to himself. All in one scene. It happened. I saw it! I’m not crazy!

No but really, freaking nothing happened this week. Thanks DB Kai for removing all the unnecessary filler.

Carly Nagisa

Who honestly thought the show would end right here? I mean honestly, even as a kid I knew that they’d survive. The pacing is better than the original but I just know it drags here cause hurr durr Toei. Also, Bulma is a real jerk here.

Chelsea disguised as kitty after assassinating a rich man.

Tesla Coil

Isn’t there some sort of “sensing aura” thing that would’ve alerted the Jaegars to Chelsea’s presence? This part wasn’t too bad, but we didn’t need the post-mission recap where Mine says “it’s a good thing there were cats around” and Chelsea says “yes it is, because I transformed into one so that the Jaegars wouldn’t find me”.

Rob Lucci

It’s bizarre watching some anime or American television and then watching a show like this. Most shows can lay out hints or do things without the need to relay every detail back at the audience. Like, you could’ve had a visual cue that it was Chelsea so you wouldn’t need to explain it and waste time.

That’s what a visual medium is for, right? Right?!

DJ JayRap

Sure is a good thing Chelsea explained to us that there were cats around. We sure couldn’t figure it out from the white cat being the only cat with a friggin’ ribbon.

Carly Nagisa

Remember my talk about Chelsea’s shapeshifting and her so called skill level being the same as Akame in assassinations? Sure would have been great if they made it combat capable and use Wave and Not Akame to test her skills….just saying.

Don’t EVER ask about Najenda’s age!

Vaioumon

Episodely antics 1, check.

Tesla Coil

Why was Tatsumi surprised that Najenda was only in her mid-20s? Look at Night Raid. All of them look like teenagers.

Rob Lucci

Lubbock laments that he couldn’t get stranded on an island with Esdeath in this scene. It’s unreasonable how much I fucking hate his character. Sans that one scene two episodes ago where there was some attempt at humanizing him, he’s been an unbearable and unlikeable ass.

DJ JayRap

I’m pretty sure Lubbock being as unlikeable as he is is some kind of intention. But it’s the Akame ga Kill writers, so I severely doubt they had this in mind. They just needed an obligatory pervert and created this without knowing it.

Carly Nagisa

This is something most animes today are guilty of as we can’t have mature looking women actually be older than mid 20s. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making Esdeath in her late 20s-early 30s and Najenda being somewhat older. It would make them feel more credible as long time war veterans and help solidify them as characters. But nope, let’s make them young adults and the rest of their subordinate teenagers.

Seryu kills some dudes.

Tesla Coil

After Seryu kills some dudes, Wave has a little talk with her about how screwed up it is to murder indiscriminately. That might’ve had impact if the entire show weren’t about indiscriminate murder.

Terrorking

Was not around for this, but I’m told the thing I noticed where male characters die quickly and painlessly while female characters are tortured and exploited happened again. You can’t use this same formula every single week to make your villains seem bad. Much like rape, it’s long lost its effect, writers.

Rob Lucci

We don’t actually see her get murdered, but yeah, the female character quivers in fear and begs in pretty much every random circumstance in this show. I think the writer is aware his audience consists of fourteen-year-olds who’ll go “nooooo not the pretty lady D:>”.

DJ JayRap

And once again we get another scene where random guys MK 2000 and 2001 die immediately. Then the chick is left behind to start begging for her life, only to get off-screen’d. Yeah okay. By now, this type of “Gotta show the villain is EVUHL” has gotten old, and is frankly getting more sexist than any other show I’ve seen. I’m not even a feminist and I’m tired of this already.

Carly Nagisa

You know if you try to make a character for the sole purpose of touching up on the moral grey area of justice. Make sure to not make them appear no different than a blatantly evil character, especially if you can’t pull it off. Also, I’m really tired of the torture aspect for females. If we didn’t weep or feel sorry for them the first hundred time, why the hell would you think it would work another hundred times?

Najenda plans to fight the Jaegers.

Tesla Coil

“There’s a religion called the Path of Peace. We need to slaughter them,” said Najenda, before spending 10 minutes explaining three different battle plans. Seriously, she wanted to join forces with a tribe to fight the capital, send people in to assassinate one guy, but then somehow concludes that fighting the Jaegars comes first.

Rob Lucci

But we’ve gotta Akame the kills! The final battle! I don’t know.

DJ JayRap

I legitimately could not follow what was being said here. Like, they were saying words, and then I was like “What?”, “What?”, “Who?”, “OH GOD SHUT UP ALREADY!”.

Carly Nagisa

Just fucking fight already. Hoping Mine dies this time.

Screenshot 2015-12-05 23.41.06

This is a trustworthy priest.

Vaioumon

I’d follow a religion with this guy at the helm, sure.

Tesla Coil

Ah yes, the demonic goat skull mask. The most recognizable symbol of peace.

Rob Lucci

In another testament to this show’s terrible worldbuilding, we’re introduced to the city’s most popular religion 15 episodes in. We’re not given bits and pieces naturally integrated into the story as it goes along, nope.

This was about as abrupt as “ANOTHER DERANGED WALL CULTIST!” from Attack on Titan, except not as funny.

DJ JayRap

That mask does not tell me he’s a good guy. Much less someone who wants peace. Wait, why are these guys even remotely important?

Carly Nagisa

I’d probably join too if I was allowed to wear the skulls of dead animals for a mask.

Screenshot 2015-12-05 23.44.09

It’s time to Akame ga Kill. Or Kill the Akames. I don’t know.

Tesla Coil

This show has a narrator?!

Rob Lucci

It’s trying to make it seem epic. It’s not.

DJ JayRap

This would be cool.

IN A BETTER-WRITTEN SHOW.

Carly Nagisa

Can’t all of them just kill each other and cue the credits instead? Would be a much better finale.

Screenshot 2015-12-05 23.50.12

Choices, choices.

Vaioumon

Episodely antics 2, check.

Tesla Coil

Remember what I said about Najenda coming up with three wildly different battle plans? Pretty sure none of them involved bikinis.

Rob Lucci

We needed Lubbock’s rant on how he wants to squeeze tits, though. That’s critical character development involving the PLOT.

DJ JayRap

Yeah, I like tits just as much as the next guy, and I sure do like me some bikinis too, but how much of this was actually necessary to their dumb plans?

I know the characters said they needed a distraction, but… did the animators and writers pick straws to see whose suggestion would be what happened?

Is this a parody?

Carly Nagisa

I think my brain just gave up here. Fuck this show.

Screenshot 2015-12-05 23.54.01

H O T S T U F F B O Y S

Vaioumon

I’m not sure if this joke is lost in translation, or just lost on me.

Tesla Coil

It’s lost in the translation between what the writer thinks is clever and what is actually clever.

Rob Lucci

I get it.

I don’t get it.

DJ JayRap

This is legitimately how I reacted.

Carly Nagisa

They could have at least said “Hot stuff coming at ya!”

Screenshot 2015-12-05 23.55.55

Kurome summons zombies with her sword.

Vaioumon

Necromancy is always a fun power.

Tesla Coil

And now we see the ultimate showdown between a sword that can Ga Kill and a sword that can Ga Unkill. So poignant.

Rob Lucci

So. What’s Kurome’s character? What’s Akame’s character? Why should I care about this conflict?

DJ JayRap

I can necromancy better since the last time we met!

Was that even a necessary line? We didn’t even know about this power until just now.

Carly Nagisa

So how is this suppose to help the minister with eternal life when making these imperial arms?

Screenshot 2015-12-05 23.56.54

S CLASS ZOMBIE DANGER BEAST

Vaioumon

What I heard was “S CLASS DANGER BEAST TESTICLE”. What was actually said is anyone’s guess.

Tesla Coil

Kurome, no! You can’t force Agumon to Digivolve!

Rob Lucci

Only a true hero like DANGER BEAST AIR MANTA can save our heroes.

DJ JayRap

Oh, a donger beest zombie actually expanded. Guess they’re all gonna die.

Carly Nagisa

Really hoping Skullgreymon takes out Mine or Leone. Just give me that Akame ga Kill.

Parasyte

Up late.

Vaioumon

Shinichi starts questioning his own humanity, and the pregnant teacher lady parasite sends a new parasite to watch Shinichi while feeding lies to him. Oh and that one girl who was hanging out with the thugs can sense parasites.

Just character stuff this ep, pretty slow going.

Terrorking

We give Sentai’s dubs a lotta shit here, but it was a good choice to have Shinichi’s VA just kill all personality in his line reading to help signify Shinichi’s loss of humanity. Really, he’s as monotonous as Migi now, or is getting there. Also, this episode had some really bland coffee.

Rob Lucci

The dynamic of Shinichi becoming less human and Migi becoming more human is pretty fascinating, and I really enjoy how it’s being employed in the daily-life bits you see in the show. It injects some character and a sense of progression.

DJ JayRap

Shinichi becoming less human is driven home here, straight up to its climax. Him being nearly as monotonous as Migi is actually one of the greatest bits of progress in this show, it’s telling us more than actually showing anything. The one time they show his lack of humanity is when he throws the dead puppy into the trash.

Hideo makes for hilarious things.

Carly Nagisa

I really like how Shinchi’s transition into being less than human is a running theme to the show. This is a prime example of conflict and character growth that I can really appreciate. But I can honestly do without the writers having his not girlfriend asking him the same question every episode. Also, damn Kana….you are one thirsty cold-blooded bitch.

Michiko and Hatchin

Hiroshi finally appears.

Vaioumon

It would seem I came into this show too late to see the fun eps that make you care about the characters. Oh well.

Terrorking

“All it takes is for one punk to get lucky.” Yeah, and that punk got lucky against Satoshi, who ends up dead in a back alley.

Rob Lucci

It took a while, but you can really see the Bebop roots towards the end of the show. The directing choices are pretty fantastic and the writing has become really captivating at the end.

DJ JayRap

I legitimately feel bad for Batista now because he just died a dog’s death. In the same Toonami block where a guy just threw out a puppy in a trash can before actually burying it.

Carly Nagisa

Man, Hiroshi looks just as much as a douche as I was expecting. I legitimately felt bad about Batista dying the way he did, he deserved to go out the same way Spike did. Or the very least, there should have been a final shootout between him and Hiroshi, with Hiroshi winning.

Shippuden

Screenshot 2015-12-06 01.26.54

Because the new ending was the only thing worth noting. Dance Hinata, dance!

Vaioumon

I tried, but it couldn’t hold my attention.

Terrorking

So having already seen the entirety of this arc back when it was first airing in Japan many moons ago, I’m left wondering why I should be sympathetic for crystal girl when she’s killing people that are just trying to escape from Orochimaru’s laboratories. As for the episode itself, utterly mediocre and just in case you forgot the theme of the filler, there’s good ol’ Jiraiya mentioning that home is where people care about you. Blah.

Rob Lucci

This episode had a crab person. Crab people. Crab person died, along with the only chance of me being entertained by this arc.

DJ JayRap

Crab person was the only thing I remember before I said I was going to sleep. Crab guy made my day. Then my colleagues just told me he died. Now I’m sad.

Carly Nagisa

And to think that Naruto is still running strong with fillers despite the manga being over. God I hate this series.

One Piece

Screenshot 2015-12-06 01.56.50.png

Blackbeard and Ace clash.

Vaioumon

Some people really like this fight. I can’t say it’s super great, but eh.

Terrorking

Apparently skin can’t burn so ASCE’s devil fruit is useless.

Rob Lucci

I liked the fight, but I’ve taken notice of how iffy the animation can be. Blackbeard’s power is bizarre and I’m not sure why Oda bothered even categorizing it-  it just doesn’t have anything in common with any other Devil Fruit.

Carly Nagisa

Toei animation  managed to dragged this out, but I can’t help but to still question the nature of Blackbeard’s fruit. It’s darkness but it doesn’t act like the traditional darkness stuff we see in most media. It’s incapable of doing traditional logia stuff but it can negate all devil fruits. How does any of this relate to one another? You could have made this be some sort of cursed weapon, cyborg implants or Haki and nothing of value would have been lost.
