Tesla Coil

I’m pretty sure the fact that this episode exists proves that DBZ Kai has completely failed in its goal.

Terrorking

Toei, you cheap sons of bitches.

Flame_Effigy

It’s filler time!

Frieza’s artstyle changing like four times over the course of an episode was very distracting.

Rob Lucci

Whacky frog hijinx featuring the least likable female cast member in the series. Meanwhile, there’s a whole galactic battle going on. Yeah.

Akame Ga Kill

Rob Lucci

Gimp Shyman and the rest of Anti-Nightraid engage in purging a bunch of people. Not pictured: Esdeath hitting on Tatsumi. But don’t worry about that.

Tesla Coil

I missed episodes 2 through 9. I don’t like this Gimp-Pyro guy.

Terrorking

I think he needs to be wearing armor. He’s not fast and he’s supposed to be a warrior guy, but his chest is more exposed than Esdeath’s.

Flame_Effigy

What was great about these introductory sequences for our Anti-Nightraid was that they summed up their entire characterization in one line while killing a bunch of mooks. One line, one character, one dimension. They’re such broad caricatures that it’s hard to tell if I’m supposed to take this seriously or not, which means the show is a failure.

It’s really his name.

Rob Lucci

fffffffffffffffffffffffabulous

I mean, his name is literally Mr. Stylish. Not much else to say.

Tesla Coil

Is that actually his name?!

Terrorking

I gave this show props for not having a stereotypical gay person in Gay Dandy, but then this guy. This guy.

Rob Lucci

Oh, you just know this shit’s gonna be great.

Tesla Coil

It’s possible that somewhere in episodes 2 through 9 is Esdeath’s introduction, her meeting Tatsumi, and a compelling love story that leads to this. I doubt it.

Terrorking

Ah, the obligatory shower scene. No C-grade harem show is complete without it.

Flame_Effigy

Just think, if Jimmy hadn’t beaten that Minotaur up in the tourney that was introduced and then immediately discarded, Esdeath could be getting some sweet sweet bull love.

Wasn’t Jimmy supposed to get an imperial arm from winning that, by the way?

Rob Lucci

Esdeath tries to seduce Tatsumi in an overly long and cringey scene straight out of a teenage male’s fantasy. Without the sex. In other words, this would happen in no reality, ever.

Tesla Coil

CAN WE GO BACK TO BULMA AND THE FROG NOW?!

Terrorking

Our evil villain, everyone!

Not Pictured: a plot

Pictured: Plot. Not pictured: A plot.

Rob Lucci

He really wants to grab those, but his inner prude doesn’t allow him to. Seriously though, this isn’t even consistent with Esdeath’s characterization. She’s been portrayed as a sadist. Why would she take “No” for an answer? I don’t understand this show or what the demographic is or who wrote this or why. Help.

Tesla Coil

Esdeath has no characterization. She slaps Tatsumi for bringing up the rebellion or whatever. Then she’s talking about how he has no choice in sleeping with her. Then she acts like a schoolgirl passing a love note to one of her classmates?! Am I supposed to be so aroused by this scene that I don’t notice these things? Because if so, whoever drew Esdeath is giving himself way too much credit.

Terrorking

What sticks out most to me in this sequence is the fact Tatsumi can go from angry, to happy, to flustered and all in under a minute.

Flame_Effigy

The worst part is that Jimmy had an inner monologue about how he’d never be able to forgive her for her terrible actions, but he still considered trying to win her over and get her to join the rebellion. I wonder if her outfit had anything to do with that.

Rob Lucci

Classy. Subtle. These are two words I don’t think of when watching this show. I screened a lot of moments here, but there are so many fanservice shots like this that it’s fucking comical.

Tesla Coil

Did they explain what that symbol on her cleavage is? It must be important since they keep trying to show it off every friggin’ scene.

Terrorking

I don’t think it’s the symbol they’re trying to show off, if ya catch my drift. It’d be kind of impossible for you to not catch my drift though.

Rob Lucci

In this scene, Tatsumi and Wave give very hamfisted exposition about their lives.

Tesla Coil

The next scene had way more to talk about than this one. Tatsumi runs away and uses some sort of cool power armour. Then Wave catches up to him, in similar power armour, and they fight. Except their armour covers their faces, so Wave didn’t know it was Tatsumi.

So how and why did Wave find Tatsumi?! I could understand it completely if Wave tracked Tatsumi, but then he would’ve known that it was Tatsumi when he caught up to him! If he wasn’t tracking Tatsumi, did he really just pick a random direction and happen to find him? Or from his perspective, did he really just pick a random direction trying to find Tatsumi and found someone on the Night Raid wearing an armour that was a prototype to his?! And he just accepted this as a normal occurrence?!

Terrorking

Yes.

Flame_Effigy

Considering the reveal (with no hinting or buildup) that Jimmy’s armor is just a prototype of  Wave’s, you’d think Wave would be able to track him and know that he could turn invisible.

But considering that Wave ALSO found him out of nowhere immediately, it shouldn’t have been that hard to accidentally find him again.

Rob Lucci

Dangerbeasts. What is the world they live in? What is the worldbuilding in this show? I don’t get it. It’s never established. It’s at such a point that I’d fully accept a shitty voiceover explaining the world.

Tesla Coil

“Oh right,” I said. “Danger Beasts. Hey, did they ever explain what those were?”
“Nope,” Everyone replied.

Terrorking

I bet Tatsumi will get a tonne of EXP from killing that and might even level up! [Actual terms used in this show]

Rob Lucci

Every girl in this show wants Tatsumi’s dick. He’s such a boring character, honestly – he’s proven he’s competent in battle a couple of times, but he has no real outward personality.

Tesla Coil

Is this really Akame? She’s the complete opposite character to the Akame from episode one. Though considering Esdeath’s characterization changed three times in one scene, I can’t expect Akame to stay consistent for a whole seven episodes.

Terrorking

Sure is lucky Akame found him without being detected by any of the Jaeger guys roaming the area.

Flame_Effigy

Also Lubbock was there.

Rob Lucci

This show doesn’t treat its characters with any respect, and it’s for really bad gags that contradict whatever minuscule characterization had been given previously. God help anybody who mistakes rapidly swinging emotions/character actions that contradict each other for “depth”.

Tesla Coil

“I care about my subordinates’ lives more than anything,” says Esdeath, while actively torturing one of her subordinates. It’s bizarre to me that they spent so long in this episode describing how Wave and Tatsumi are similar. And yet, Esdeath tortures Wave for not being able to track a suit of armour that can turn invisible, but goes full-on schoolgirl mode for Tatsumi even after he asked her to give up all of her morals and beliefs.

This is the worst show. Its characters have no characterization. Its setting isn’t explained at all – what the hell is a Danger beast?! Are they in a video game or not?! The plot is just things happening with no rhyme or reason. There’s no tone! How do you write something with no tone?!

Terrorking

I can’t help but feel everything Esdeath does is the writer just pouring his fetishes into his work, and not in the good way like an Eyes Wide Shut or even an Evangelion does. This is a complaint specifically for the dub: the voice acting is just so wooden. This one may be for the subbed version, since I’ve never seen it, but there’s never a quiet moment in this show. Someone is always talking, and this episode was so boring to me it finally stood out.

Flame_Effigy

I liked the part of this episode where Jimmy figured out the one chick was Akame’s little sister because she was protective of her food, but not because of the schoolgirl uniform, the hair, the eyes, or the looking exactly the same. So wacky.

                                                                             Parasyte: The Maxim

Terrorking

In one episode, this female character that showed up has more characterization than the entire cast of Akame ga Kill. It’s almost baffling how Toonami can put two shows of such wildly varying quality right next to each other. It’s like whiplash.

Flame_Effigy

She basically did the semi-seductive, obviously dangerous  older female character keeping a watchful eye on the young male protagonists that Esdeath wishes she could do, all without having to strip or show off her cleavage. The voice acting is still not great, and it took me out of the moment a few times, but the episode did make make me mad when it ended right before a fight because I wanted to see the next episode, so it’s still doing something right.

Rob Lucci

As mentioned above, this show pulls off the idea of a seductress far more subtly than Akame Ga Kill does. This show is proving itself so far with such good pacing and effective bits of characterization getting fed to the audience slowly but satisfyingly.

                                                                          Michiko & Hatchin

Terrorking

Hiroshi’s a player.

Rob Lucci

If I’m right, this episode is probably really important-  there’s an ongoing theme of maturity, growing up, and relationships in this show. The episode with the cheating husband and this both may serve as setup for how Michiko will react if she ever meets Hiroshi again.

Basically, I think she’ll grow up and realize that Hiroshi’s a “player”, and that he’s not really interested in her love or having any real responsibility. Seems like he’s running from it, after all. With this episode, we know he’s alive, but we also know that he ran at the first sign of Michiko coming back. He’s probably afraid of commitment, and I think that will be very important to the show’s last few episodes.

                                                                               Naruto: Shippuden

Rob Lucci

Shikamaru’s plot is dumb. Why did Kakuzu merge with all of his hearts? His jutsu are already overtly destructive, combining only makes them slightly better and makes him a bigger target.

Naruto’s entrance is ehhh.

Flame_Effigy

Shikamaru’s casual takedown of Kakuzu with Hidan’s jutsu was ridiculous. Kakuzu doesn’t even have blood.

Oh boy, Naruto comes in at the end of the episode to save the day. Maybe his introduction would have been cool if we had any indication that he was on his way.

                                                                                            One Piece

Rob Lucci

Frankie’s face says it all.
